"Any Hat Any Size"
By Eileen Laferriere Schoonmaker

This is not an exact science and I tend to tweak things as I see what needs to be done while I am working on a
project. I just wanted to be able to give beginners a starting point to be able to build on your own experience as
you learn more. Believe me when I tell you that so much is learned by trial and error. I don’t think there is any
way to avoid it! So be patient with yourself, relax, be loose and have fun.

  1. Choose a hook size that is compatible with your yarn.
  2. Choose a stitch such as single crochet, half double crochet or double crochet.
  3. Determine what size hat you want, either using a size chart or your own measurements. Keep in mind how you want your hat to fit.
  4. As a general rule I like to make my hats about I inch smaller than the actual head measurement. You will need to know the circumference and the height of the finished hat that you want. So if I want a hat to be 18” around I will increase until the flat circle measures 6” across at the widest point (circumference divided by pi (3.14) = diameter). In order to make it simple, I just multiply the diameter of the circle x 3 and know that it will be a little larger. With a little practice you will be able to fine tune your fit even more.
  • I am using a double crochet in this tutorial, but you can use any stitch.
  • (Do Not count beginning chain as a stitch...I like the way it fills in at the join and is less noticeable)
  • Join is the same throughout. (join with a slst to first dc)

Let's Begin:

  • Make "Magic Circle" and chain 3.
  • Using the* Basic Increase Round Formula, work increase rows until your circle measures the desired diameter.
  • Continue to crochet without increasing until you have reached the desired height of your hat before adding earflaps. (This is measuring from the bottom of the opening of the ear, over the top of the head to the bottom of the opening of the other ear).
*Basic Increase Round Formula (increasing 10 stitches each round)
Rnd 1. 10dc in magic circle, join with a slst to 1st dc. (10dc)
Rnd 2. ch2, 2dc in same st , 2dc in next dc. (2dc in each dc) around, join. (20dc)
Rnd 3. ch2, 1dc in same st, 2dc in next dc. (1dc in next dc, 2dc in next dc) around, join. (30dc)
Rnd 4. Ch2, 1dc in same st, 1dc in next dc, 2dc in next dc. (1dc in next 2dc, 2dc in next dc) around, join. (40)
Rnd 5. Ch2, 1dc in same st, 1dc in next 2dc, 2dc in next dc. (1dc in next 3dc, 2dc in next dc) around, join. (50)
Rnd 6. Ch2, 1dc in same st, 1dc in next 3dc, 2dc in next dc. (1dc in next 4dc, 2dc in next dc) around, join. (60)
Rnd 7. Ch2, 1dc in same st, 1dc in next 4dc, 2dc in next dc. (1dc in next 5dc, 2dc in next dc) around, join. (70)

By now you should be able to see the progression and continue to increase indefinitely…:o)

Adding Earflaps:

On hats I make with a double crochet I use a hdc stitch with the earflaps.
Babies = 8hdc
Toddlers = 10hdc
Children and Adults = 12hdc

Place the seam of your hat in center back. Place markers where you want your earflaps to begin and end
counting the number of stitches you will be using. I like my earflaps to begin about 2 stitches in the front and
count toward the back making sure they are centered evenly from the back seam.

Join yarn by inserting hook in first stitch, pull through yarn and ch1.
Rnd 1. hdc in same stitch and in the next 7dc. Ch1, turn. (8hdc)
Rnd 2. Hdc in next stitch and each hdc across ending hdc in turning ch1. Ch1, turn. (7hdc)
Rnd 3. Hdc in next stitch and in each hdc across ending hdc in turning ch1. Ch1, turn. (6hdc)
Rnd 4. Hdc in next stitch and in each hdc across ending hdc in turning ch1. Ch1, turn. (5hdc)
Rnd 5. Hdc in next stitch and in each hdc across ending hdc in turning ch1. Ch1, turn. (4hdc)
Rnd 6. Hdc in next stitch and in each hdc across ending hdc in turning ch1. Ch1, pull through loop and cut yarn.
(3hdc)

Beginning on the right of the next earflap, join yarn and make second earflap in the same manner.
You can stop your earflaps at any length; just make sure you end with an odd number of stitches in order to be
able to place your ties in a center stitch. (I learned this the hard way)
Finishing the edge your earflap hat

Join yarn in the back of your hat by inserting hook in first stitch, pull through yarn and ch1.
Sc in same stitch as ch1 and in each stitch until you get to the 3 center stitches on the earflap.
2sc in 1st st, 1sc in next st, 2sc in next st. Continue to sc around until you get to the next 3 center stitches of the
other earflap. 2sc in 1st st, 1sc in next st, 2sc in next st. Continue to sc around, join with a slst to first sc. Cut yarn
and weave in ends.
