Single Crochet Granny Square Border

The following are instructions for a border for a typical granny square. Many crocheters decide to do one large granny square instead of doing multiple and sewing them together. My personal goal was to come up with several designs that can be applied to a typical granny square.

Instructions Granny Square Itself

The instructions are for changing colour as indicated in the Christmas Granny Square Afghan as found on Yarnspirations. You can change colours as often or as little as you wish.

Instructions for the This Border

This border is pretty simple and does like a picture frame idea around your granny afghan. I can be used for any granny afghan, regardless if it is a traditional granny like this or just a regular solid granny.

Of course, the border can be any colours you choose. Be creative! This border consists of 5 rounds and leaves about a 1.5″ border around your afghan.

  1. Fasten on to any ch-3 space. Ch 1, sc into same space, ch 2, sc into same space. *Sc into each stitch and ch-1 space across to next corner. In corners place 1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc. Repeat * around. Join with a slip stitch to beginning sc. Fasten off colour if you wish. If keeping the same colour, just slip stitch to the ch-2 space and begin next instruction.
  2. Ch 1, sc, ch 2, sc into same ch-1 space. *1 sc into each around to next corner. In corners, place sc, ch 2, sc. Repeat * around. Join with with a slip stitch to the beginning sc. Decide to fasten off or keep on going. If keeping the colour, slip stitch to next ch-2 space and begin next row.
  3. Repeat Round 2 – 3 Times or as much as you need your border to be.
  4. When done, fasten off and weave in  your ends. It’s pretty simple.
