Bernat Happy Holidays Yarn
In the past, I picked this yarn many years ago and I wasn’t a fan to put it mildly. Yes, my friends, I don’t love all yarn. I had issues with this yarn, the materials was rough and the filament that made it sparkle was like sand paper to the top of the hand as I used it. The finished project was rough. I was a pouty little school girl unhappy! Talk about big suck a puss eh!
I left it in the box for a week and Daniel suggested I do something for a project. I opened up the protective bag and as soon as I touched it, I am like “What the hook happened to this yarn?”
I squished with fingers… This is not the same yarn. I poked it… it fluffed back at me. I then took the ball and rubbed it to the top of my fingers… “What no abrasive qualities and it’s like the filament is not even in the yarn!”
So I grabbed a ball and asked Daniel to squeeze it and feel it. He is like that is so soft! I am like, “I know right! Something is different with this yarn!”
Of course, I had to get on the blow horn and ask Yarnspirations what is changed with this yarn. Turns out, they reformulated the yarn and it’s softer! Best yet, the shiny filament is a different material which shines but without the scratch. They changed it a while back. If you are ever curious about the filament, they add it in the doubler stage of processing yarn to make it one of the plies that twists together with the rest of the yarn. I show how yarn is made below.
So it proves a point really. As times change, technology and advancements of manufacturing moves forward. A yarn I had been loathing and avoiding on the shelf is my new best friend. I just crocheted a cowl and unless I looked it, I would never feel the scratch like I had before. So same brand, new formula. It’s like cake batter, they just sweetened up the mix to be more fabulous.
Moral of the story, yarns change over time, though the packaging appearance may not. Sometimes you just have to squeeze those balls on the shelf and see if you feel a difference. In this particular yarn brand, I noticed it instantly. I went to Walmart as they have a new display box of this yarn and felt it… yep… it’s the new formula! Awesome Possum!
