Newsletter Legislation Policy
If you are following Canadian politics, you will know that Canada is beginning a new program effective July 1, 2014 that is against anti-spamming through newsletters and distribution lists that companies collect. Read More about this Law.
The new legislation prohibits companies from blindly adding email addresses to lists for electronic distribution and etc. Email owners must consent either through written contract and/or self subscribe to newsletters. If a person is on an email list currently that didn’t choose to be there, that’s when the ball of wax melts and trouble will ensue. For some companies, this new legislation is going to be a real pain and adjustment to the way they do business.
You will notice emails coming in asking you to stay subscribed. Some are offering bribes of giveaways and etc. This is being done as the companies may not have asked you permission to send you emails already and are currently looking for your permission to keep you on their newsletter list. That choice remains up to you.
Some argue, this new law is going to harm Canadian Businesses from reaching consumers. Let’s face it, if you run your business right and allow your customer service to be outstanding, this shouldn’t be something to worry about. Consumers should have the right to decide what they want to receive. Referrals for businesses go much further than just constant bombarding of emails to a consumer.
The Crochet Crowd is 100% Compliant Already
It’s going to take a few years for this legislation to take full effect but The Crochet Crowd has nothing to worry about. We have been and are already 100% compliant before word of this came down at the end of 2013.
On a personal note, I get an extreme amount of email on a weekly level. Due to the amount of email I get, I don’t like getting onto newsletter lists without my knowledge first. It’s common courtesy to ask first or allow me to make my own decision. I consciously chose several years ago not to force subscribers and/or purchase email lists to build our audience. Our growth has been a result of just delivering the best possible services and making our Crowd fun to follow. It has been my intention since Day 1 to allow our audience to make a decision that is suitable for themselves. I think that is fair and ethically the right thing to do.
We have always and will continue to protect the privacy of our fans and newsletter lists. Though we are teamed up with some pretty incredible companies, we have a no share, no rent and/or exchange policy in effect. Behind the scenes of what we do, no companies have ever approached us to buy, rent or exchange our email newsletter lists. It’s not something we have had to worry about.
With nearly 100,000 subscribers currently, each and every one has opted to receive our newsletter through free choice. We have always had an opt out button on each and every newsletter for people to make a decision that best suits them. In compliance with this new legislation, the opt out will remain and must be a part of the newsletter. For us, it’s no big deal as it’s always been an option at the bottom of the newsletter.
I am being emailed from concerned Canadians / Americans about this new legislation due to the fact that we may be vulnerable to this law as serious fines will hit those who are non-complaint. I sincerely appreciate the concern and looking after my back. I would like to publicly assure all, even those outside of Canada, we have been compliant all along.
Just an FYI
Of the many giveaways and challenges that we do, we have always had a policy that we do not add names of email entries to our lists as a result of entering a giveaway and/or challenge. After each challenge and giveaway, we automatically delete all emails to reset our inbox but also don’t do anything with the emails as far as data entry. Truth is, we don’t have the resources of people power and/or time to do this. It’s easy to not be tempted when you don’t have the people power to make it happen.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
