Yarnspirations presents a pattern I have been curious about: the Bernat Blanket Crochet Cardigan. I don't see many designs in this category for this yarn.
Though you see the front as a crochet granny stitch in rows, the back of the cardigan has four granny squares to cover most of you.
This is using Bernat Blanket All-In-One Granny Square yarn. When you look at the ball count, just keep in mind that the granny square version of yarn isn't as long for yardage as the regular Bernat Blanket yarns.

The front and sleeves of this sweater let the yarn flow out of the ball as is, and the colours change on their own. It will just be one ball you have to pay attention to, four granny squares to make, and the rest you can put your hook in the wind and crochet without pressure. It's the best of two worlds.
I find that with stitch-alongs for clothing, it's not as daunting because the pattern is broken into bite-sized pieces, and I don't feel as overwhelmed.
If you don't need my help, you can download the pattern and get going. It's a free pattern to enjoy.

Sizing
The pattern is written in three sizes. You have XS, S, M, L/XL, and 2 XL/3 XL. The ball counts vary as the bigger the size, the more balls you will need.
Top Tip For Gauging Size
In crochet clothing, pay attention to two things:
- The Gauge. Do A Gauge Check. This will be determined by the granny square in this case. Use the same hook size you did to get the squares to work.
- If you are not going to use Bernat Blanket All In One to get the gauge for the square, we have a separate video below on how to run a gauge check.
- Finished chest measurements. If you are a person without an inflated chest (breasts), you may not be the size you think you are. I am typically a male size large, but in the chest measurements, I would be a medium in this design.
Colour Coordination - Substitution
For my version, I want to coordinate the colours using regular Bernat Blanket Brights yarn so I can control the colour flow on the front and sleeves. However, the granny squares on the back are consistent for all sizes. Knowing Bernat Blanket yarns are bigger in size and yardage. I figured out how much you would need.
If you are opting not to use the All-In-One, just add an extra ball of yarn for each size.
Materials List
- 1 Ball of Bernat All-In-One Granny Square Yarn.
- XS, S, M = 3 More Balls of Bernat Blanket.
- L/XL = 4 More Balls of Bernat Blanket.
- 2XL/3XL = 5 More Balls of Bernat Blanket.
You will note that the 2XL/3XL says 7 balls total, but since each Bernat Blanket is larger, you will only need 5 balls.

Part 3: Gauge Check
If you are using the Bernat All-In-One Yarn, the gauge check is determined by the square itself when you crochet it. However, if you are not going to use this Bernat Blanket brand but another, you will need to run a gauge check. I will show you how to do that in this video.
Part 4: Colour Coordination
Part 5A: How to Crochet The Granny Square
If using Bernat Blanket All-In-One Granny Square yarn.
Part 5B: How to Crochet The Granny Square
If you are not going to use the Bernat Blanket All In One but another Bernat Blanket brand, the video below shows the same granny square, with the yarn cut at the end of each round and new colouring shown. Please note that the way I do granny squares is different from the pattern, but it yields the same results.
