Crochet Little Flickers Christmas Light Bulb Strand + Tutorial

    Sharing is caring!

Create a strand or two of Crochet Little Flickers Christmas Lights for your home holiday decor. I prefer realism and have added my own signature touches to this simple, yet super cute design that is relatable to most people. I added a lip around the socket region to make the bulb look like it's screwed in.

The pattern is easy to follow, and the sky is the limit.

For kicks, I added a gray heather bulb to signify a burnt-out bulb on my strand of lights. Definitely, people are going to point that out, and you can say it burnt out and have a giggle about it.

    Yarn Details

I had a mixed bundle box that Repeat Crafter Me put together a couple of years ago, and the colours in it were amazing.

Red Heart Super Saver. 198 g/7 oz, 333 meters/364 yards

    • A - Shocking Pink
    • B - Spring Green
    • C - Turqua
    • D - Saffron
    • E - Pumpkin
    • F - Great Heather (to look burnt out as a conversation bulb)

    Caron One Pound. 453.6 g/16 oz, 742 meters/812 yards

    • G - Kelly Green (socket and strand)

    Polyfil to stuff the light.

    Hook: 4.5 mm / US 7

    Gauge: 14 sc and 16 rows = 4” [10 cm]

    Size: 5” long x 1.5” diameter

Note: If you would like these to be bigger, increase your hook size to 5 mm / H/8 or 5.5 mm / I/9.

    Abbreviations

    • Beg = Begin(ning)
    • Ch(s) = Chain(s)
    • Rep = Repeat
    • RS = Right Side
    • Sc = Single Crochet
    • Sc2tog = Single Crochet 2 Together
    • Sl st = Slip Stitch
    • St(s) = Stitch(es)

    Notes

This pattern uses continuous rounds without slip-stitching at the end of each round to avoid slip-stitch lines. Use a stitch marker to keep track of the rounds.

This is demonstrated in the tutorial as well.

    Instructions

I am going to provide the instructions in a table format, since you will probably be doing multiple and will use the empty boxes to check off the instructions as you pass them.

With Any Colour for The Light Bulb… Begin

.............Beg & 1st rnd: RS. With colour, create an adjustable ring. 5 sc in ring. Do not join. Mark the last stitch with a stitch marker and move it to the end of each round. 5 sc.
2nd rnd: 1 sc in each sc around. 5 sc.
3rd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. 10 sc.
4th rnd: 1 sc in each sc around. 10 sc.
5th rnd: *1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. 15 sc.
6th rnd: 1 sc in each sc around. 15 sc.
7th rnd: 1 sc in each sc around. 15 sc.
8th rnd: 1 sc in each sc around. 15 sc.
9th rnd: 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in last 7 sc. 17 sc.
10th rnd: 1 sc in each sc around. 17 sc.
11th rnd: Sc2tog over next 2 sc, 1 sc in next 6 sc, sc2tog over next 2 sc, 1 sc in last 7 sc. 15 sc.
12th rnd: *1 sc in next sc, sc2tog over next 2 sc. Rep from * around. 10 sc.
    Stuff the light bulb.
13th rnd: 1 sc in each sc around. Sl st the next 2 sc and break colour.

    Socket

With G to resemble the socket and light strand colour.

.....14th rnd: Attach G with standing single crochet. 1 sc in each st around. 10 sc.
15th rnd: 1 sc in each sc around. 10 sc.
16th rnd: 1 sc in each sc around. 10 sc.
17th rnd: 1 sc in each sc around. 10 sc.
18th rnd: 1 sc in each sc around. 10 sc. Stuff the socket.
19th rnd: *Sc2tog over next 2 stitches. Rep from * around. 5 sc.
Fasten off yarn, leaving a longer strand. Collect the remaining 5 loops and pull them closed. Finish the strand by diving into the centre to force the end to look flat.

To give the socket a bit of depth and hide the join between the two colours, we are going to add 1 layer to the existing socket and add one more round to make it look like the bulb is sunken into the socket.

One single crochet Christmas light bulb.

Hold the bulb with the socket end facing towards your body.

1st rnd: Attach G with a standing single to a side post of the last rnd of the colour (rnd 13). 1 sc in each of the remaining 9 posts around. Do not join.

2nd rnd: 1 sc in each st around. Sl st next 2 sts and fasten off.

Due to how you are holding the bulb, the fold-over will naturally cover the edge of the colour change and bulk it up.

Do as many bulbs as your hearts desire.

    Light Strand

1st row: With G, ch 30. Join to the top of a socket with a sl st. *Ch next 20. Join with sl st to the next bulb. Rep from * across. After the last bulb is joined, ch 30 to finish.
