Red Heart Free Crochet Peppermint Christmas Throw + Tutorial

I was floored when I first saw the Crochet Peppermint Afghan in the summer of 2014. Designed by Bendy Carter, this afghan is so incredible that it inspired me beyond belief. I knew instantly this was an afghan a crocheter could fall in love with.

A new tutorial was created in December 2025. The updated tutorial focuses on the central motif by using only Edging 1. It isn't easy to see the twisting action of each of the 6 types of motifs, and I believe people may need to do only one type of edging and apply it to all 42 large motifs. Of course, you can decide for yourself.

You will need approximately 2560 yards of white and 1530 yards of red. In the Red Heart Super Saver ball format of the 7 oz size. 7 balls of white and 4 balls of red.

The looks are a bit deceiving as you may think you need to make 42 large motifs and be done with it. While all motifs are the same from rounds 1 - 11, the final round is different. Motifs have been assigned a number between 1 - 6. The edging is changed so the spirals can appear twisting instead of all 42 motifs being the same. However, if you were to do all 42 motifs with the same edging, I don't think it's a deal-breaker.

    Yarn Requirements

    Red Heart Soft, 5 oz / 141 g, 256 yds / 234 m.

    • White 10 balls - Contrast A (Yarn Total for Colour. 50 oz, 1410 g / 2560 yds, 2340 m)
    • Really Red - 6 Balls - Contrast B (Yarn Total for Colour. 30 oz, 846 g / 1536 yds, 1404 m)

If substituting to Red Heart Super Saver, here's the information below:

Red Heart Super Saver, 198 g/7 oz, 333 meters/364 yards

    • 7 balls of white.
    • 4 balls of red.

Given the complexity of the layers and the 6 different edges, I felt it appropriate to create a workbook. I have provided a link to it below. You are welcome to save it, download it, and/or print it.

I was highly inspired by this afghan and took the time to examine the pattern and make working notes, as there are 6 different motifs. This is the free download for Mikey's Peppermint Working Notes Booklet.

Is there a way to crochet this so the back looks the same as the front?

Unfortunately, the technique used cannot be duplicated on the back. I did see on social media someone was complaining how ugly the back is. Maybe you could do 2 motifs and put them together back to back.

This is my first attempt at something like this. I tend to crochet tight, so my question is if after I get it together, I want to make it wider. Do I just make another row of peppermints? If the answer is yes, which peppermint numbers do I make and in which order do I arrange them? I can’t seem to find that anywhere. But so far I’ve gotten a ton of comments and compliments just based off of the pieces I’ve made. And your videos are priceless thank you so much.

Hey Mikey! This is my first time reaching out to you. I love the peppermint blanket. My question is if I wanna make it wider do I just add another row of peppermints? And if all I do is add a row of peppermints in which order do I add them to continue the pattern integrity?

Maybe study the diagram assembly and possibly just add a another row that is probably a row on the opposite side of blanket so you don't have two of the same style side by side.
