    The Crochet Shells Palliative Care Blanket, designed by Mikey, is a tremendous stash-busting pattern that helps those in need and fills those centres with handmade small blankets.

    Palliative Care Blankets are usually made for people in an upright position, such as wheelchairs or chairs. They are long enough to cover laps and legs but not drag on the floor.

    Materials

    Size: 38” wide by 44” long. I intended to use the stripes vertically down.

    This is a great stash-busting project to finish up any balls you may have. I used leftovers from one of the stitch-alongs from years ago.

    Bernat Blanket Yarn - 300g / 10.5 oz, 201 meters / 220 yards

    A - Cloudy Sky Twist - 2 Balls. (discontinued)

    B - Birch - 2 Balls

    Hook Size: 10 mm / N/15

    GAUGE = 8 sc and 7 rows  = 4” [10 cm]

    Approx = Approximately

    Beg = Beginning

    Dc = Double crochet

    Rep = Repeat

    RS = Right side

    Sc = Single crochet

    Instructions

    Note: The yarn is carried up the sides, with the two yarns trailing behind each other.

    With A, ch 80. Multiples of 3 chs + 2.

    1st row: RS. 1 sc 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. DO NOT turn. Pull up large loop and remove hook.

    2nd row: With B, attach to the first sc of the last row. Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across. Pull up large loop and remove hook. Turn.

    3rd row: Put A loop back onto hook and pull to the height that matches the last row. Sl st into the top of the first stitch in the row below. Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout). 1 dc in same st as the sl st. *Sk next 2 sc, 3 dc in next. Rep from * across. Sk next 2 sc, 2 dc in last st. DO NOT turn.

    Important Note: Careful on 4th & 8th rows, you will have only 2 dc in the final space before the end to keep the blanket evenly counting going back into the single crochet in the row after. It’s marked in red on the diagram to call your attention to it.

    4th row: Put B loop back onto hook and pull to the height that matches the last row. Sl st into the top of the first stitch in the row below. Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout). 1 dc in same st as the sl st. Sk next dc, 3 dc in sp bet posts before next dc. *Sk next 3 dc, 3 dc in sp bet posts before next dc. Rep * across until the 2nd last sp between the groups below. Sk next 3 dc, 2 dc in sp bet posts before next dc. 1 dc in last st. Pull up large loop and remove hook. Turn.

    5th row: Put A loop back onto the hook and pull to the height that matches the last row. Sl st in the top of the first st. Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across. Pull up large loop and remove hook. DO NOT Turn.

    6th row: Put B loop back onto the hook and pull to the height that matches the last row. Sl st in the top of the first st. Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across. Pull up large loop and remove hook. Turn.

    7th row: Put A loop back onto hook and pull to the height that matches the last row.

    8th row: Put B loop back onto hook and pull to the height that matches the last row. Turn.

    Rep 5th to 8th rows 10 more times. Break.

    Edging

    Note: See the tutorial on how the yarn is buried in the final border.

    With RS facing, with A, join with sl st to any corner, ch 1, 3 sc in same corner. 1 sc evenly around the blanket placing 3 sc in each corner. Bury the carried yarn under the sc stitches to hide them. Join with sl st to beg sc. Fasten off.
