Crochet Speak Easy Blanket Pattern + Tutorial

The Crochet Speak Easy Blanket was inspired by Red Heart Super Saver Jazzy. I got thinking about the smoky colouring of the yarn changing colours so quickly that it doesn't colour pool. It works out to be even in appearance, and with this yarn, it was just such a casual-looking pattern.

It starts with a bit of stained-glass work, but the rest is easy-flowing, three-round repeating.

The free download included provides crochet diagrams and extra pictures not included here.

Stitch the Rainbow Crochet Blanket + Tutorial

    Instructions

With A, ch 4. Join with sl st to beg ch to form ring.

1st rnd: RS. Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout). 2 dc in ring. [Ch 2. 3 dc in ring.] 3 times. Hdc join. 3 sts per side.

2nd rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in beg corner sp. 1 sc in next dc, ch 1, sk next dc, 1 sc in next dc. *(1 sc. Ch 2. 1 sc) in next corner sp. 1 sc in next dc, ch 1, sk next dc, 1 sc in next dc. Rep from * around. 1 sc in beg corner sp. Hdc join. 5 sts per side.

TIP: When an hdc join is used, the colour continues into the next round. If there is a ch 2 and join, it means the colour will be finishing and breaking the yarn is required to start a new colour in the next round.

3rd rnd: Ch 3. 1 dc in beg corner sp. 1 dc in each st and ch-1 sp to next corner. *(2 dc. Ch 2. 2 dc) in corner sp. 1 dc in each st and ch-1 sp to next corner. Rep from * around. 2 dc in beg corner sp. Ch 2. Join. Break A. 9 sts per side.

    TIPS:

    • In the last round, we skipped a stitch; that skipped stitch is where the treble will go. That is 3 rows below, aka 1st rnd in this case.
    • In the next round, we will start overlaying the trebles to create the centre look.
    • The trebles are worked IN FRONT of the project.

4th rnd: With B, join with standing sc any ch-2 corner sp. Ch 1, sk next dc, 1 sc in next dc. Tr into the next empty st in the 1st rnd. 1 sc in next dc, ch 1, sk next dc, 1 sc in next dc. Tr into the same st as the other treble in the 1st rnd. 1 sc in next dc. Ch 1, sk next dc. *(1 sc. Ch 2. 1 sc) in next corner sp. Ch 1, sk next dc, 1 sc in next dc. Tr into the next skipped st in the 1st rnd. 1 sc in next dc, ch 1, sk next dc, 1 sc in next dc. Tr into the same st as the other treble in the 1st rnd. 1 sc in next dc. Ch 1, sk next dc. Rep from * around. 1 sc in beg corner sp. Hdc join. 11 sts per side.

5th rnd: Ch 3. 1 dc in same beg corner sp. 1 dc in each st and ch-1 sps across to next corner. *(2 dc. Ch 2. 2 dc) in corner sp. 1 dc in each st and ch-1 sps across to next corner. Rep from * around. 2 dc in beg corner sp. Ch 2. Join. Break B. 15 sts per side.

    TIPS:

    • In the 4th round, we created 3 ch-1 spaces. Those will each hold the trebles.
    • When you see the tops of two trebles together in the diagram, you are looking at treble 2 together stitches that use the last skipped stitch and the next skipped stitch 3 rows below.
    • The beginning and ending trebles of each side are just a treble to the location.
    • In the 6th rnd, we will not be adding any stitches in the corner spaces. This is intentional to keep the square lying flat.

6th rnd: With A, join with standing sc to the first double after a corner sp. 1 tr into the next skipped stitch on rnd 3. Sk the st behind the tr and 1 sc in the next st. Ch 1, sk next dc, 1 sc in next dc. [Tr2tog using the last skipped stitch and the next skipped stitch on the 3rd rnd. Sk the st behind the tr2tog and 1 sc in the next st. Ch 1, sk next dc. 1 sc in next dc.] twice. 1 tr into the same skipped st of the last leg of the tr2tog st on the 3rd rnd. 1 sc in next dc. *Ch 4. Sk the next ch-2 sp corner. 1 sc to the first double after a corner sp. Rep from * around. Sk the last ch sp. Ch 2. Hdc join. 15 sts per side.

7th rnd: Ch 3. 2 dc in same beg corner sp. 1 dc in each st and ch-1 sps across to next corner. *(3 dc. Ch 3. 3 dc) in corner sp. 1 dc in each st and ch-1 sps across to next corner. Rep from * around. 3 dc in beg corner sp. Ch 3. Join. Break A. 21 sts per side.

    TIPS:

    •  This is the final time you will be doing the trebles going down three rows below.
    • The empty skipped stitches in the 5th round are at the locations for the trebles to go into.
    • The beginning and ending trebles of each side are just a treble to the location.
    • Note that the first trebles and the ending trebles use the ch-2 corners from the 5th rnd.

8th rnd: With B, join with standing sc to any corner sp. 1 tr into the ch-2 space corner in the 5th rnd. Sk the st behind the tr and 1 sc into next dc. Ch 1, sk next dc, 1 sc in next dc. Tr2tog using the corner space in the 5th rnd and the next skipped stitch on the 5th rnd. Sk the st behind the tr and 1 sc in next dc. Ch 1, sk next dc. 1 sc in next dc. [Tr2tog using the last skipped stitch and the next skipped stitch on the 3rd rnd. Sk the st behind the tr2tog and 1 sc in the next st. Ch 1, sk next dc. 1 sc in next dc.] twice. Tr2tog using the last skipped stitch and the next ch-2 sp corner. 1 sc in next dc. Ch 1, sk next dc. 1 sc in next dc. 1 tr in ch-2 sp of the 5th rnd. *(1 sc. Ch 2. 1 sc) in corner sp. [Tr2tog using the last skipped stitch and the next skipped stitch on the 5th rnd. Rep from * around. 1 sc in beg corner sp. Hdc join. 23 sts per side.

9th rnd: Ch 3. 1 dc in same beg corner sp. 1 dc in each st and ch-1 sps across to next corner. *(2 dc. Ch 3. 2 dc) in corner sp. 1 dc in each st and ch-1 sps across to next corner. Rep from * around. 2 dc in beg corner sp. Ch 1. Hdc join. 27 sts per side.

The next rnd isn't shown in the diagram, but the blanket is now very simple.

10th rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in beg corner sp. 1 sc in each st to next corner. *(1 sc. Ch 2. 1 sc) in corner sp. 1 sc in each st to next corner. Rep from * around. 1 sc in beg corner sp. Ch 2. Join. Break B. 29 sts per side.

The pattern now maintains 3 rounds for each colour. The first round is single crochet, the 2nd is double crochet and the 3rd is single crochet. Complete the 3 rounds and switch to the other colour for the next 3 rounds.

11th rnd: With A, join with standing sc to beg corner sp. 1 sc in each sc to next corner. *(1 sc. Ch 2. 1 sc) in corner sp. 1 sc in each sc to next corner. Rep from * around. 1 sc in beg corner sp. Hdc join. Stitch counts increase by 2 per side.

12th rnd: Ch 3. 1 dc in same beg corner sp. 1 dc in each sc to next corner. *(2 dc. Ch 2. 2 dc) in corner sp. 1 dc in each sc to next corner. Rep from * around. 2 dc in beg corner sp. Hdc join. Stitch counts increase by 4 per side.

13th rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in beg corner sp. 1 sc in each dc and to next corner. *(1 sc. Ch 2. 1 sc) in corner sp. 1 sc in each dc to next corner. Rep from * around. 1 sc in beg corner sp. Ch 2. Join. Break A. Stitch counts increase by 2 per side.

14th rnd: With B, join with standing sc to beg corner sp. 1 sc in each sc to next corner. *(1 sc. Ch 2. 1 sc) in corner sp. 1 sc in each sc to next corner. Rep from * around. 1 sc in beg corner sp. Hdc join. Stitch counts increase by 2 per side.

15th rnd: Ch 3. 1 dc in same beg corner sp. 1 dc in each sc across to next corner. *(2 dc. Ch 2. 2 dc) in corner sp. 1 dc in each sc to next corner. Rep from * around. 2 dc in beg corner sp. Hdc join. Stitch counts increase by 4 per side.

16th rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in beg corner sp. 1 sc in each dc and to next corner. *(1 sc. Ch 2. 1 sc) in corner sp. 1 sc in each dc to next corner. Rep from * around. 1 sc in beg corner sp. Ch 2. Join. Break B. Stitch counts increase by 2 per side.

Rep 11th to 16th rounds - 6 More times. Break B at the end of the repeat.

You can keep adding more rounds if you want it bigger, and the blanket will not buckle up.

Next rnd: With A, join to beg ch-2 sp corner. Ch 3. 1 dc in same beg corner sp. 1 dc in each sc to next corner. *(2 dc. Ch 2. 2 dc) in corner sp. 1 dc in each sc to next corner. Rep from * around. 2 dc in beg corner sp. Hdc join.

Next rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in beg corner sp. 1 sc in each dc and to next corner. *(1 sc. Ch 2. 1 sc) in corner sp. 1 sc in each dc to next corner. Rep from * around. 1 sc in beg corner sp. Hdc join. Stitch counts increase by 2 per side.

Last row: Sl st in each st and ch around. Join with an invisible join to the beg sl st to finish. Fasten off.
