Create a crochet scarf using the Crochet Swept Stitch, with stitches resembling brushstrokes. With Red Heart Bitty Stripes, it's addictive to see how the colour strokes will appear on the scarf. Sweep away the winter blues.

In the downloadable version, you will also receive the crochet diagram for added clarity.

The pattern was updated on February 1, 2026.

    Instructions

Note: Stitch repeat is 4 chains + 3.

    With A, ch 303.

1st row: RS. 1 sc 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. 302 sc.

2nd row: Ch 2 (doesn’t count as st), 1 hdc in each sc across. Turn. 302 hdc.

    TIPS:

    • The front post crochets go around the same post as the first sc, which is directly above. See the crochet diagram for clarity.
    • Each of the front post stitches is separate from the other, but on the diagram for easier reading, they share the same hooking formation around the front post. Build up the front post from top to bottom, whereas the last dtrfp is around the front post at the bottom.

3rd row: Ch 1. 1 sc in first hdc. 1 sc in next st. (1 dcfp, 1 trfp, 1 dtrfp) - all around the hdc post directly below the first sc you just did. Sk next 3 hdc. *1 sc in next st. (1 dcfp, 1 trfp, 1 dtrfp) - all around the hdc post directly below the first sc you just did. Sk next 3 hdc. Rep from * across. 1 sc in last hdc. Turn. 302 sts.

4th row: Ch 2 (doesn’t count as st), 1 hdc in each sc across. Turn. 302 hdc.

5th row: Ch 1. 1 sc in first hdc. Turn. 302 sts.

Rep 4th and 5th rows 3 more times. Last Row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each st across. Fasten off.
