All new approaches and patterns for Crochet Modern Granny are in rectangular format. This is the Blanket 2025 Rectangle Modern Granny Baby Blanket pattern.

Looking at the 2016 crochet pattern from The Crochet Crowd, the corners don't do it justice when using colour-transitioning yarn. The slip stitching to the corner to start each round can be very in-your-face. Reimagined with a new approach.

This design change also allows you to go as big as you need to be—stop when you feel like it. If you make this design a bit bigger, you will also have a palliative care-sized lap blanket.

People generally enjoy colour transitioning yarn, such as this Caron Colorama Halo yarn ball, which is a whopping 500 g / 17.6 oz. Just one ball is needed for a baby blanket.

Changing the corner starting and finishing locations does a better job. It feels seamless.

    TIPS

The change is to start the round at a different position and finish the rounds with a (Ch 1 and half double crochet join) to the top of the first stitch. The Ch 1 + hdc is the equivalent of a ch-3 sp. The half-double crochet leaves the crocheter in the right position to start the next round.

I reduced the hook to a 4 mm / G/6 crochet hook but intentionally so the stitches are tighter and showcase the stitch definition really well.

    Caron Colorama Halo (500 g/17.6 oz, 968 meters/1059 yards)

    A - Silver Steel - 1 Ball

Hook: 4 mm, US. F/6 crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

Match the hook to the yarn ball band recommendation if substituting.

    Gauge 15 sc and 17 rows = 4” [10 cm]

    Baby Blanket Size: 42” x 32”.

    Abbreviations

    • Beg = Beginning
    • Ch(s) = Chain(s)
    • Dc = Double crochet
    • Join = Ch 1, 1 hdc in beg stitch or top of ch-3. (equivalent of ch-3 corner sp)
    • Prev = Previous
    • Rep = Repeat
    • Rnd(s) = Round(s)
    • RS = Right side
    • Sc = Single crochet
    • Sk = Skip
    • Sl st = Slip stitch
    • St(s) = Stitch(es)
    • Sp(s) = Space(es)

TIP: Notice the join instructions in the abbreviations.

Ch 31. (To change the size of the interior length, the stitch multiple is 3 chs + 4. The interior centre is 6.5” long.)

1st rnd: RS. 2 dc in 4th ch from hook. Sk next 2 ch. *3 dc, sk next 2 ch. Rep from * to last ch. (3 dc. Ch 3. 3 dc. Ch 3. 3 dc) all in last ch - new corners made. Working on opposite side of ch. Sk 2 ch. *3 dc, sk next 2 ch. Rep from * 3rd last ch. In last chain, (3 dc. Ch 3. 3 dc). Join.

TIP: The double crochet from the last round forms groups of 3. We used space between the groups for every other round.

2nd rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in same corner sp below. Ch 3, [miss next 2 dc. 1 sc between next 2 dc. Ch 3.] Rep [ ]  to corner. (1 sc. Ch 3. 1 sc) in next corner ch-3 sp. Ch 3. (1 sc. Ch 3. 1 sc) in next corner. Ch 3, [miss next 2 dc. 1 sc between next 2 dc. Ch 3.] Rep [ ]  to corner. (1 sc. Ch 3. 1 sc) in corner sp. Ch 3. 1 sc in beg corner sp. Join.

Short and long sides are now established to repeat instructions across each corner.

3rd rnd: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 2 dc in same corner sp. (3 dc in each ch-3 sp) to corner. *(3 dc. Ch 3. 3 dc) in next corner ch-3 sp. (3 dc in each ch-3 sp) to corner. Rep from * around. 3 dc in beg corner sp. Join.

Going forward, the 2nd and 3rd rounds are repeating and getting bigger each time. 4th and 5th rounds are written without giving the number of repeats per side.

4th rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in same corner sp below. Ch 3, [sk next 3 dc. 1 sc into sp bet 3 dc group, ch 3.] Rep [ ] to next corner *(1 sc. Ch 3. 1 sc) in next corner ch-3 sp. Ch 3, [sk next 3 dc. 1 sc into sp bet 3 dc group, ch 3.] Rep [ ] to next corner. Rep from * around. 1 sc in beg corner sp. Join.

5th rnd: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 2 dc in same corner sp. [3 dc in next ch-3 sp]. Rep [ ] to next corner. *(3 dc. Ch 3. 3 dc) in next corner ch-3 sp. [3 dc in next ch-3 sp] Rep [ ] to next corner. Rep from * around. 3 dc in beg corner sp. Join.

Rep 4th and 5th until you have enough yarn to do one final round of single crochet.

This sample doesn’t have the single crochet border applied, but it is listed below if you want it.

Border: Ch 1. 1 sc in same beg sp. 1 sc in each st across to next corner. *3 sc in next corner. 1 sc in each st to next corner. Rep from * around. 2 sc in beg corner sp. Fasten off.

I have two hooks and in trying to look up the hook. I used an F/6 but according to list it says G/6. All I know, is that I used a 4 mm crochet hook. Choose either or. It's confusing I know.

I just don't understand why you start by saying :
"With A, ch 4. Join with sl st to form ring. " This is probably a typo or comes from your previous squared modern granny blanket.

Because if I follow the diagram provided, I start by this :
"Ch 31. (To change the size of the interior length, the stitch multiple is 3 chs + 4. The interior centre is 6.5” long.)"

And then I proceed like the rest of the instructions or the diagram.

      Have a nice evening.

Great eye on that. Yes, I always take a copy of the last pattern I made and I accidentally left that in. It's been corrected. Thanks for the kind response and letting me fix it.
