If you are buoy-obsessed like Mikey, you may love his Free Crochet Buoy Pattern. It is intended for indoor use only, not as a floatation device or outside, as the yarn will not withstand the weather elements.
Here in Nova Scotia, especially in oceanside settings, used buoys are on display for outdoor decor as they are generally bright, rough-looking looking and a feel of the Maritimes.
I see home decor like this in possible areas like cottages, restaurants and any place where it could be holiday-based, and fishing, lakes, and more are part of the environment.

This is a cool use of scrap Bernat Blanket yarns you may have that you are unsure what to do with. I see these in a cottage, beach or holiday setting.

Abbreviations
- Beg = Begin(ning)
- Ch(s) = Chain(s)
- Rep = Repeat
- RS = Right side
- Sc = Single crochet
- Sc2tog= Single crochet 2 together
- Sk = Skip
- Sl st = Slip stitch
- Sp(s) = Space(s)
- St(s) = Stitch(es)
- Standing sc = Form slip knot and insert onto the hook. Insert hook into st, yoh and pull loop through, yoh through 2 loops.
- WS = Wrong side
Note:
- You will be making this in continuous rounds. Use a stitch marker to keep track of the rounds so there are no slip stitching lines.
Buoy - Starts at The Bottom of the Buoy
With A, create a magic ring (adjustable circle). Ch 1 to lock it.
1st row: RS. 6 sc in magic ring. Do not join. 6 sc.
2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. 12 sc.
3rd rnd: *1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. 18 sc.
4th rnd: *1 sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. 24 sc.
5th rnd: *1 sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. 30 sc.
6th rnd: *1 sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. 36 sc.
7th rnd: 1 sc in back loop only in each sc around. 36 sc.
8th to 10th rnds: 1 sc in each sc around. 36 sc.
11th rnd: *1 sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. 42 sc.
12th to 14th rnds: 1 sc in each sc around. 42 sc.
Sl st into the next stitch and break A.
15th rnd: Join B with standing sc to first sc. 1 sc in each st around. 42 sc.
16th rnd: 1 sc in each sc around. 42 sc.
17th rnd: *1 sc in next 5 sc, sc2tog. Rep from * around. 36 sc.
18th and 19th rnds: 1 sc in each st around. 36 sc.
20th rnd: *1 sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog. Rep from * around. 30 sc.
21st rnd: 1 sc in each st around. 30 sc.
Sl st in the next st and break B.
You will join the next colour, so it’s directly vertical to where the yarn changed between A & B below. This will keep both changes at the same point at the back of the buoy.
22nd rnd: Join B with standing sc to a sc st directly vertical to the one below. 1 sc in each st around. 30 sc.
23rd to 27th rnds: 1 sc in each st around. 30 sc.
28th rnd: *1 sc in next 3 sc, sc2tog. Rep from * around. 24 sc.
29th to 31st rnds: 1 sc in each st around. 24 sc.
32nd rnd: *1 sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog. Rep from * around. 18 sc.
33rd rnd: 1 sc in each st around. 18 sc.
34th rnd: Sctog around. Fasten off.
Using the tail and tapestry needle, collect the remaining 9 sc stitches and pull the hole shut.
Cord - Tunisian
You will be using only three loops on the hook for the bag version.
- FwP = Forward pass
- Loh = Loop(s) on hook
- Lp(s) = Loop(s)
- Rep = Repeat
- RetP = Return pass
- Tss = Tunisian Simple Stitch
Change your hook to 5 mm / H/8 and use Red Heart Super Saver.
Chain 3.
Foundation Row (FwP): Keeping all lps on the hook, working in back
bump sk first bump from the hook (the lp on the hook is the first ch) and draw up a lp in each ch across. 3 loh.
RetP: Ch 1. Yoh and pull through two loops (twice).
Next Row: Tss across. RetP: Ch 1. Yoh and pull through two loops (twice).
Rep last row until rope is 28” long. Bind off. Do not cut or weave in tail ends.
Using one tail end and your crochet hook. Insert the crochet hook into the buoy near the top so it goes through both sides. Wrap one tail end and pull the tail end with half of the cord through. Even up the cord so it’s equal lengths.
Weave in the ends on both ends of the cord.
Do an overhand knot tie.
