The Crochet Crowd
Since leaving you back in the beginning of March for our annual Crochet Cruises and conducting professional development, our membership has grown by over 30,000 here on Facebook. That’s a lot of hooks and creative minds.
For those just joining us, I am Michael, known online as Mikey and I host The Crochet Crowd along with my support team Diva Dan, Laura Jean and Jeanne. That’s right, it’s just the four amigos behind the scenes that keep our space active.
We are Canadian in origin as we live in the sticks, you can say, and crafting, especially crochet, is our active pass time. A hobby, turned community and going viral across the globe. Established in 2008, we are one of the world’s largest engaged crochet communities. So if you see me spelling colour wrong, don’t mind me… I prefer to use our own spelling here Canada but will indulge our USA and imperial mathematical friends with using inches. For hook sizes, I usually say both metric and USA sizes to make it easier.
Generally speaking, The Crochet Crowd revolves around the crochet community. I get a cheap thrill, if not crazy excitement when I share projects that you show us on our wall. But here’s a hint, Facebook doesn’t allow us to share pictures that are buried into a conversational thread. So if you are going to share, it’s best posted as a separate post. Therefore, either Jeanne, Laura Jean or myself can come along and randomly select your photo for a Crochet Crowd Feature. It’s like winning a lotto. But to keep it fair, we never make side deals or promise a feature position so that everyone has an equal opportunity. People think they know what we will share but truth is, we – ourselves, have no idea until we do it.
One thing that makes us unique here at The Crochet Crowd is that we don’t schedule ahead any of our posts. Everything is done in real-time. That’s right, if I am addressing you at 6 am on a Sunday Morning, it’s the real deal. It makes us unpredictable and engaging to expect the unexpected. If we had a schedule, I am sure we wouldn’t be as fun to follow.
Here at The Crochet Crowd, we have only 1 sponsor. If you guess Yarnspirations, you are guessing right. We aren’t directly part of their team but we chime in on ideas and share things back and forth. You will notice with my tutorials is that I introduce myself from The Crochet Crowd and Yarnspirations. They use my videos on their network. But let’s be honest, they help pay our bills here at The Crochet Crowd and keep our educational platform free to all who desire to learn to crochet. Rarely do we say go and buy, but instead, we know you are smart and can make your own decisions on what types of yarns to play with. Yarnspirations hopes that you will support one of their Yarn Lines such as Bernat, Patons, Lily Sugar’n Cream and Caron Yarns. Makes sense. You need yarn to learn and play with, so they hope by providing free education, like we do, that you can consider one of their brands. With all 4 major brands, there is nearly 90 different brands to choose from.
What makes us special is that we are everyday craft yarn users. Yep, you will find us at Walmart or Michaels shopping. You lucky Americans have more choices with different retailers than we have in Canada. With online shopping being easy, you can either get it delivered or visit a retailer near you. We get you are on a budget, heck ya… so are we here at The Crochet Crowd. Money doesn’t grow on trees but if I find a lucky seed one day where that will happen, I will be sure to share the love.
We also have a bi-monthly magazine called Mikey Magazine. It’s a free magazine geared for Everyday Crocheters. Yes, we feature up to 50 crocheters who post their own WIP or Finished Projects on our Facebook. You just never know. Our Diva Dan themes up each edition and looks for pictures that fit the theme. It’s a free magazine and you can sign up to receive a copy if you wish to have it delivered to your inbox. It’s digital only so we don’t kill trees in the effort of making our magazine.
I will be returning back to my desk on Saturday and then start to buckle down and get ready to continue Spring 2016. I have finalizing of Cruise Pics and more to do and a few reports to write up detailing our events.
So if you are just joining us, Welcome to The Crochet Crowd. For our existing community members, I’m glad to be back and doing what I love. As much as it’s nice to travel, there truly is no place like home!
