What about sugar starching? I’ve heard a lot of people talking about that, too.

I use sugar starch, mainly because I usually have sugar in the kitchen. It works very well but takes quite a few says to work into the fibres

Sugar starch has the potential to attract ants and other creepy crawlies.

Plaid makes a product called Stiffy. I find it at A C Moore’s in the isle where the glues are. This works great! In fact, I just made a tea cup & saucer and used it to stiffen and it came out very beautiful! No smell, no boiling, but just as messy as the rest!
