Review: Herrschners Has Purchased Big Twist Yarn Brand from Joann Fabrics & Crafts

    Sharing is caring!

    • Email

Herrschners has announced that they are the new owners of Big Twist Yarn Brand, which was a private label for Joann Fabrics & Crafts. With the collapse of Joann, private labels within Joann went for sale.

I have never purchased from Herrschners but that shouldn't surprise anyone. I am Canadian, and customs and duty taxes are added to the orders as they are coming from the United States. I prefer to order from sources that already have the product on the Canadian side of the border to avoid the customs and duty extra charges. I will give a lot of credit to Herrschners, as their policy on Canadian and international shipping is clearly stated and located at the bottom of their website. The free shipping opportunities will not apply to international orders. Americans will be able to take advantage of promotions like that. I wouldn't expect international shipping to be free, though, so I'm not complaining.

What exactly is Herrschners? They are an in-store and online platform based in Wisconsin, United States, that brings together hobbies such as yarn, needlework, plastic canvas painting, colouring, and puzzles. Yes, they also carry some miniatures.

At Herrschner's you will also find brands that we use here at The Crochet Crowd such as Red Heart, Bernat, Caron and Lily Sugar'n Cream. So you can grab your yarns in one place, just like you could have with Joann Fabrics and Crafts. You will find brands like Red Heart Super Saver, Bernat Super Value, Red Heart Super Saver Bitty Stripes, and Red Heart Super Saver Brushed, for example. Some of the yarn is sold in retail packages in groups of 2 or 3 to prevent splitting up the yarn from the same batch as when it was made.

While people are quick to complain, I think we in North America are spoiled and often forget that other parts of the world, including Canada, do not always have the same choices. Having options is a great thing. Everyone has an opinion and loves what they love. Go for it. Be happy with what you love.

I've never seen any negative reviews about using Herrschners as an online sales platform. Of course, there are always exceptions in online ordering, too, but I am a person who reads reviews before making a purchase.

In the yarn world, there was a lot of outcry about Big Twist getting pulled, as Joann's private-labelled yarn was popular. Again, Joann was based in the United States and had no presence here in Canada; I have never used Big Twist to give an opinion. Based on the outcry about the label going out of service, it must have been a great yarn to play with.

Big Twist is a value-based product that suits the budgets of many people. Of course, in the world of crochet, if the yarn isn't free, it's often considered overpriced, as some would say. Can never win.

Stay tuned to Herrschners for when they begin rolling out the yarn label. I expect that, due to the influx of inventory sold off during the Joann liquidation, people may be set for a while. One review I did read on Facebook mentioned that someone is at least happy to know they can replace the yarn if they run out.

Bernat Super Value is my favourite brand among all the existing brands. I have grown up with Bernat being my go-to brand and one that I trust. Red Heart came to Canada when Walmart and Michaels entered the market back in 1994, but I continued to use Bernat as I didn't visit those stores for many years. Once Zellers, a Canadian-wide chain retailer, collapsed in the 2000s, I turned to Red Heart Super Saver as my only option. Herrschners also carries those brands for your shopping convenience.

Great news for Big Twist yarn brand. Be sure to support Herrschners to keep this label and type of yarns alive for years to come. Without Herrschners, this brand might have collapsed and become just a memory. For Big Twist brand lovers, rejoice.

We don’t have that information. You will need to seek answers from Herrschners for the timeline of release.

The one thing that saddened me about Joann closing was the loss of Big Twist yarn. Those of us who have used it regularly can attest to the sturdiness and softness of this yarn. Plus, the price didn't hurt either! The color choices were unbelievable. I hope Herrschners is ready for the influx of online orders. If they are only located in one state (Wisconsin?) it may be hard for those that live elsewhere to get what we need. I wonder if they will sell it through Amazon. Anyone heard about that happening? I attached an afghan from your Inspired by Grace made with Big Twist yarn. Anyway, thanks for this review.

I don't know if Herrschners will do that. I don't have direct contact to ask on your behalf. Americans are generally lucky for what they have access to compared to other parts of the world, including here in Canada. I'm unsure if most Americans realize it or not. It's hard to know.
