Crochet Into the Light Afghan Free Pattern, Diagrams & Tutorial

The Crochet Into The Light Afghan by Jeanne Steinhilber was a much-needed stitching journey filled with light-bouncing textures. It was updated on October 27, 2024, to retest and update the pattern with tips. The free pattern includes written instructions, diagrams, and tutorials.

Background Story:

The couple here from Nova Scotia is enjoyable. The husband here never had long hair, but Covid was hit with lockdowns. He made a pact to not cut his hair until the lockdowns were lifted. Lockdowns happened, I think, twice, maybe three times, and masking restrictions lasted 18 months. He cut his hair after the masking limitation was lifted. He's cute either way.

My book was written and produced during Covid's coming into being, and this book was released before Covid restrictions were lifted.

The sister of this afghan is the Orbs Crochet Blanket.

Jeanne found herself trying to cope with emotions during this unprompted crochet design. It was never intended for the book, but when she showed us behind the scenes, we were gob-smacked by its intentional shadows.

Materials - Book Version

• Caron Cakes (249 g/8.5 oz, 407 m/445 yds) - Dusted Cream, 7 balls
• Use 5.5 mm, U.S. I/9 hook or size to obtain gauge.
• Measurements Approx 60” x 60” [152 x 152 cm]. 
• The gauge is 12 sc and 14 rows = 4” [10 cm].

The pattern was retested with Caron Blossom Cakes, and a new pattern, the Crochet Orbs Afghan, was developed, with small differences near the end of the product. You can find that on our website as well.

If you want to use this yarn instead, you will use seven balls of Caron Blossom Cakes, and the blanket will only be 50” x 50” as the yarn is thinner than the original Caron Cakes.

25th and 26th rnds: As 7th and 8th rnds. 81 sc is the 25th rnd and 83 sc is the 26th rnd. The stitch counts are in order of the round numbers. 81 sc per side is for rnd 7 and 83 sc per side is rnd 8.

Instructions

Some of the instructions repeat continuously throughout the pattern. Consumers wanted everything written out instead of just stating repeating rounds ? to ? for clarity. The book had limited space, and it's been put back in this book.

Centre Bavarian Section

1st rnd: Ch 1, *1 sc in ring, ch 5, tr4tog in ring, ch 5; rep from * 3 more times, join. 4 quarter bottom wheels.

2nd rnd: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st as join, *[ch 1, 4 tr top of the tr4tog] 3 times, ch 1**, 1 sc in next sc; rep from * twice, then * to ** once. Join to beg sc. 4 corner wheels. Break.  Switch to a different ball to have the next wheel a different colour for Caron Cakes. With Caron Blossom Cakes, just continue with the same ball. 

TIP: If you slip stitch to the next starting location, the stitches will look odd and be really noticeable. It is best to break the yarn and restart for the best award-winning blue ribbon prize opportunities. 

3rd rnd: Into any upper right (if right-handed, upper left if left-handed) ch 1 sp before corner, attach with standing sc, *ch 5, trbp4tog over next 4 sts, ch 5, 1 sc in next ch 1 sp, ch 5, trbp8tog over next 8 tr sts, ch 5,** 1 sc in next ch 1 sp; rep from * twice, then from * to ** once, join to beg standing sc. 1 half wheel.

Design notes: 

• I missed the 1 dc in the stitch between the ch 5 sps of the next round when testing. Watch for that. It’s an easy mistake to make. 
• Watch the corners in the next round, as they are unique for stitch count continuance.
