Crochet a Self-Fringing Scarf

I really enjoy working with the Caron Cake yarn and wanted to try something different with the colors so I created this Self-Fringing Scarf.  I see a lot of people talking about the abrupt color change so I thought I could change that by using the cake from both ends at the same time to create a different look.  I think the simple stitch works well with color changes to make this self-fringing scarf.  If Caron Cakes yarn is not available, then I would suggest this as a great stash buster will as many colors as you like, changing color each row.

Self-Fringing Scarf

~ by Jeanne Steinhilber

  • 1 Caron Cakes yarn
  • Crochet Hook size J - 6.0 mm

You will be alternating every row, first by pulling from the center of the cake for row 1 and 2, then pulling from the outside of the cake for row 3.  Continue to alternate every row after that.  This gives the interesting color changes that will occur from the cake of yarn.

  1. Begin with an 8 inch tail before your slip knot.  Ch 250.  In 2nd ch from hook, sc across.  Turn.  - 249 sc.
  2. Ch 1, sc in 1st st, *ch 1, skip next st, sc in next st;  repeat * across to last st, sc in last st.  Finish off and leave an 8 inch tail.  Turn.
  3. Begin with an 8 inch tail before your slip knot, sc in 1st st, *ch 1, skip next st, sc in next ch-1 space;  repeat * across to last st, sc in last st.  Finish off and leave an 8 inch tail.  Turn.
  4. Repeat row 3 until you are out of yarn.

Finished size - 72" x 6" excluding fringe.

You could tie on extra fringe if you'd like, but I did not on mine.  I just gathered 3 strands together and tied them into a slip knot.

I love this pattern--it's so easy and simple and looks amazing! I'd love a Caron Cakes hat to go with it. Do you have a pattern for one?

Sorry, I am not very good with hat patterns.

I love this pattern! It's quick and easy and different. I'll post a picture of the finished product in Royal Icing. But the picture would look much better if I had a matching hat to go with it! Do you have a matching hat pattern?

Will it work up the same pattern if you make it shorter? Would love to make one for my granddaughter but 6 ft.+ is too long for her.

Sure, just chain to your desired length.
