Yarnspirations has a vintage pattern from their archives called Bernat Crochet Baby Shawl that is a change from 2024 standards of medium or chunky weight yarns. It used Bernat Baby (Fingering) yarn, which was thin. Back in the day, yarn for babies tended to be thin. In today's world, this type of crochet is less likely to be done as crocheters love speed with thicker yarn. This pattern is from the Yarnspirations Archives of the 1960s - 1970s.
To help you, the stitch multiple to change the beginning chain is multiples of 8 chains + 4. This will allow you to change the yarn and hook size to suit your wishes.
Mikey drew a crochet diagram for your help. Once the pattern is established, you will repeat the 6th to 8th rows until you have just one final shell left at the point of the shawl. With each sequence of 3 repeating rows, the project will get faster as you will have less to crochet the longer you work on this.
This pattern resembles the Crochet Virus Shawl but is a historical design predating the virus shawl.
