Free Caron Crochet Charity Box Beanie Adult Hat Pattern + Tutorial

I noticed I had 3 o'gos left for the Caron Colorama and wondered, what can I do with this yarn that will benefit others through charity giving? I decided to put my mind at work and come up with a design that can use this yarn. The o'gos have five colours, but I only used four. With the yarn left over, I can make another hat, but the colour sequence will need to be reimagined.

At the time of publishing this, there is still yarn in clearance at Yarnspirations.

Clearance: Caron Colorama O'go Yarn + 4 Patterns

This is my Crochet Charity Box Adult Beanie intended to keep others warm.

Caron Coloram O’Go, 180 g/6.4 oz, 208 m/228 yds

  • Only 1 O’go is needed and only 4 colours are used. The colours are up to you on how you want to lay them out. The starting colour uses most of the colour itself.

Colours shown that Mikey is wearing here is called Concord, the other two are from two separate O’gos with the colour called Wine Time.

I did have yarn left over from the O’Go that could be used for another hat but the colour sequence is up to you.

Hook: 6 mm / J/10

Gauge: 10 sc and 11 rows = 4” [10cm]

Abbreviations List

  • Beg = Begin(ning)
  • Ch = Chain(s)
  • Dc = Double crochet
  • Dc2tog = Double crochet 2 together
  • Rnd(s) = Round(s)
  • RS = Right side
  • Sl st = Slip stitch
  • WS = Wrong side

Instructions

Create a magic circle with only 11 double crochet in the ring. Here's a tutorial on how that's done.

With first colour you decide, create an adjustable ring (magic circle).

1st rnd: RS. 11 dc in ring. Join with sl st to beg dc. 11 dc.

TIP: Ensure to pull tight at the end of every slip stitch when finishing a round to ensure no gapping spaces.

2nd rnd: Ch 1. 2 dc in each dc around. Join with sl st to beg dc. 22 dc.

3rd rnd: Ch 1. 2 dc in same dc as join, 1 dc in next dc. *2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next dc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to beg dc. 33 dc.

4th rnd: Ch 1. 2 dc in same dc as join, 1 dc in next 2 dc. *2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next 2 dc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to beg dc. 44 dc.

5th rnd: Ch 1. 1 dc in each st around. 44 dc.

6th rnd: Ch 1. 2 dc in same dc as join, 1 dc in next 3 dc. *2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next 3 dc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to beg dc. 55 dc.

7th rnd: Ch 1. 1 dc in each st around. Join with st st to beg dc. Break first colour. 55 dc.

Decide the colour before the band and used at the last round. See the tutorial if you need clarification on what this means.

8th rnd: With second colour choice, join with sl st to the same st as join. Ch 1. 1 dc in same st as join. Dc2tog over next 2 dc. 1 dc in remaining stitches around. Join with sl st to beg dc. 54 dc.

9th rnd: Ch 1. 1 dc in each dc around. Join with sl st to beg dc. 54 dc. Break 2nd colour. TURN.

Decide the 3rd colour, which is the pop-out colour in the band.

10th rnd: With 3rd colour and WS facing, join with sl st to same st as join. Ch 1. 1 dc in same st as join, 1 sl st in next st. *1 dc in next st, 1 sl st in next st. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to beg dc. Break 3rd colour. TURN.

Decide 4th colour, which is resting between the pop-out colour.

11th rnd: With 4th colour and RS facing, join with sl st in same st as join. Ch 1. 1 dc in each st around. Join with sl st to beg dc. Break 4th colour. TURN.

12th rnd: With 3rd colour and WS facing, join with sl st to same st as join. Ch 1. 1 dc in same st as join, 1 sl st in next st. *1 dc in next st, 1 sl st in next st. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to beg dc. Break 3rd colour. TURN.

13th rnd: With 4th colour and RS facing, join with sl st in same st as join. Ch 1. 1 dc in each st around. Join with sl st to beg dc. Break 4th colour. TURN.

14th rnd: With 3rd colour and WS facing, join with sl st to same st as join. Ch 1. 1 dc in same st as join, 1 sl st in next st. *1 dc in next st, 1 sl st in next st. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to beg dc. Break 3rd colour. TURN.

15th rnd: With 2nd colour and RS facing, join with sl st to same st as join. Ch 1. 1 sc in each st around. Join with sl st to beg sc. Fasten off.
