Donna Bondy, our guest designer, has adapted my original Study of Texture Afghan and made it into the Crochet Study of Texture Rectangle Sampler Blanket. Her adaptation didn't remove any of the original texture. The afghan is a different shape and takes approximately the same amount of yarn to make a rectangle.
Updated October 30, 2024, with stitch counts and more current standards of writing patterns.
We have provided two sizes that you can strive for.
- The blanket is 48” wide (short side) x 58” long (long side).
- At the end of the document, an alternative ending to add 20” per side has been given to increase the size to 68” wide (short side) x 78” long (long side).
This is the square version.
Donna has added a bonus to increase the size by 20" per side. For your convenience, she has tested the pattern twice.

Abbreviations
- Approx = Approximate(ly)
- Beg = Begin(ning)
- Ch = Chain(s)
- Dc = Double crochet
- Dcbp = Yoh and draw up a loop around post of next stitch at back of work inserting hook from right to left. (Yoh and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice.
- Dcfp = Yoh and draw up a loop around post of next stitch at front of work inserting hook from right to left. (Yoh and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice
- Hdc = Half double crochet
- Join = Join with hdc to top of ch-3 or beg stitch.
- Picot = Ch 3. Sl st back into last sc worked.
- Popcorn = 5 dc in same stitch. Drop loop of last dc and insert hook into top of rst dc. Pick up dropped loop and pull through.
- Rep = Repeat
- Rnd(s) = Round(s)
- Sc = Single crochet
- Sl st = Slip stitch
- Sp(s) = Space(s)
- St(s) = Stitch(es)
- Tog = Together
- Trbp = (Yoh) twice and draw up a loop around post of next stitch at back of work inserting hook from right to left. (Yoh and draw through 2 loops on hook) 3 times
- Trfp = (Yoh) twice and draw up a loop around post of next stitch at front of work inserting hook from right to left. (Yoh and draw through 2 loops on hook) 3 times
- Yoh = Yarn over hook
Notes:
- Ch 2 at beg of rnd does not count as hdc.
- Ch 3 at beg of rnd counts as dc.
- When you join using half double crochet to the top or the ch-3 or beg stitch, the corner space is created by the half double crochet stretching over. Use that half double crochet like it would be a ch-2 space.
- Working from the center of the ball, match outside color of previous ball with next ball of yarn to achieve best results.
Stitch Counts Ordering at the end of Each Instruction
The first side of each round is always the long side. The instructions will be in order of (long side and short side).
Counting Stitches Per Side
Ignore the corner spaces for the stitch count. See the video below for clarity.
Instructions

Note: Treble front posts count as the stitch it is sitting in front of. When the pattern says to skip the next dc, it’s referring to the stitch behind the treble front post.

You can finish this blanket now by completing the 55th rnd or skip it and add another 20” in both width and length.
55th rnd border: Ch 1. 1 sc around post of joining hdc. Picot. 2 sc in same sp as first sc. Picot. *[1 sc in each of next 2 sts. Picot]; rep from [ to ] to next ch-2 sp.** (2 sc. Picot. 2 sc. Picot) in next ch-2 sp. Rep from * twice more, then from * to **. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.
The bigger 20” additional size will require more yarn. The yarn quantity is unknown.
If you want the blanket to be more giant, stitch counts for the additional add on are omitted below:
- Rep 32nd to 42nd rounds.
- Rep 25th to 31st rounds.
- Rep 20th to 23rd rounds.
- Rep 42 round.
- Rep 13th to 19th rounds.
- Rep 6th to 12th rounds.
- Rep 2nd to 5th rounds.
- Finish with 55th round.

I would like to do this pattern but I love to have the chart instead of the instruction which I found from FB leading to this website. The instruction was not very clear about the join, would it be hdc or just a slip stitch? I don't know where to ask and know that you might not get to my message here so I am ... crying now!!
Mikey says
Morning Huong. I am not going to be making a crochet diagram for this pattern. It's a lot of work and I need to move on with different patterns.
HDC joins are used when the colour continues on and only use a Slip Stitch when the colour needs to be changed out.
Ash says
Beautiful pattern and fun to create..... However, I REALLY don't like that there is no stitch count at the end of each row (I know these were removed as people were confused, i think it makes it more confusing), and the amount of times I've had to frog so far because the stitches in the current row do not align with stitches from the previous row, and I'm only up to row 21 and needing to frog again!
Im making this for a housewarming gift, rectangle was requested specifically, and as much as I love this, I am about to quit and start a different pattern. I do not have time to waste frogging and recrocheting rows.
Mikey says
I'm really sorry about that Ash. This was my very first pattern that went out into the world and I didn't provide it. Since this released, over the years I realized the amount of complaints for the yarn choices, shape, stitch counts and so much more were such a burden. I can probably go through the pattern today to count it up and record it on the blog but I understand if you just want to quit it as well. It is my fault after all.
I believe my real sample is still here but it's possible I donated to hospice unit. I will have to check.

I am currently editing and just passed Row 20th. The document that I am editing on the website is real-time. I wouldn't print it yet but chances are, based on others on the original design you may have missed the extra dc that is at the end of each side on the 20th rnd.

Hi All
Thank you so much for this pattern. I am just starting the rectangular version and want to do the extended version, extra 20 inches of so. Do you have any idea of how to calculate how much extra yarn I will need. I've just bought the yarn as indicated in the rectangular pattern, but would like to get the extra now while in case it isn't available by the time I get to it. Any guidance would be helpful. Many thanks.

I wish I knew an answer like that. I've never been able to figure out yarn quantities without actually do it in person. I'm sorry.
