Vintage Rippling Scarf

I came up with this scarf because someone asked me to help them with an afghan pattern that they found on Ravelry.  I didn't want to make an afghan, so I thought why not just swatch the pattern to learn it, and thus a scarf was born.  The original pattern is called Vintage Rippling Blocks and the designer has a great photo tutorial if you need help with the stitch.  I made mine with slow coloring changing yarn, but you can change colors as often as you'd like.  The options are endless. This is the Vintage Rippling Scarf pattern.

  • 1 skein Ice Yarn Magic Light
  • Hook size 5.0mm H
  • Yarn needle

To begin, you have to sort of create the first row.  Don't give this a lot of thought, just work it step by step.

Row 1 - Ch 4, 3 dc in 4th ch from the hook; *ch 4, 3 dc in 4th ch from the hook; repeat from *4 more times.  You should have a line of 6 humps.  This if the first row of blocks.  Turn.

Row 2 - Ch 1, slst in first ch 3 space, ch 3, 3 dc in same space, slst in next ch 3 space, ch 3, 3 dc in same space, slst in next ch 3 space, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc all in the same space (peak made), slst in next ch 3 space, ch 3, 3 dc in same space, slst in next ch 3 space, ch 3, 3 dc in same space, slst in last ch 3.  Turn.

Repeat row 2 until the desired length.  Change colors as often as you'd like.  Try it in your favorite team colors.  Have fun and be creative!

Are the bumps supposed to be on bottom when I turn after row 1? I can't figure out how to turn after row 1!!

I have exactly the same question as Rebecca. I am stuck after row 1 and don't know how to proceed, as there is no "ch 3"??

So sorry for the delay in responding.

When you turn, you only chain and slip stitch into the chain 3. This kind of pulls the stitches a little bit, but once you see it done, it makes more sense.

Row 2 – Ch 1, slst in first ch 3 space, ch 3, 3 dc in same space, etc.

Greetings, Are the Peaks supposed to line up or stack upon one another, or do they stagger? My rows of peaks and blocks turning out strange looking. Thank you.

I would like to use this pattern for a prayer shawl. Any suggestions for making it wider?

I got the idea for the scarf from an afghan (link in the post), so instead of doing an afghan width, you could do enough ripples to make is 18" wide. That's a great idea for a shawl. 🙂
