No frills, no crazy stitching, double thickness and warm. These are the Crochet Shallow Beanies made for Mikey and Daniel. Written pattern is included in this article.
When I crocheted my first hand, I couldn't believe the wind was blowing through the hat and into my ears! I'm like, "Why did I bother!?" I could come to understand that materials and stitchwork make a huge difference.
The yarn discontinue for the original one back in 2012 and left my pattern in the dust and I really wanted to do another one for both Daniel and I this winter 2023, so I reviewed my old pattern and gave it a makeover, so there is no slip stitching.
Here is the new rewrite to avoid slip stitching. A new tutorial for my hats has been made with customization tips if needed. It's been made for adults, so I don't have a pattern for kids.
Daniel and I prefer shallower hats so they don't interfere with our jackets when we are banging out the house or even driving in the car.
All of the hats are double-stranded. In the tutorial, I will share tips on how it can be done from the same ball. All hats are done with a crochet hook size 5 mm / H/8. They will fit an average adult but are customized for Daniel, and I's wishes.
Version 1
This one is double-stranded using the colour called Show Time with Red Heart Roll With It Melange yarn.
Version 2
This one is double-stranded, using the same ball. The colour is called Curtain Call, using Red Heart Roll With It Melange yarn.
Version 3
This one is double-stranded using the colour Theater and Tabloid at the same time with the Red Heart Roll With It Melange yarn.

Instructions for 2023 Version Hats
Yarn = Red Heart Roll With It Melange, colours suggested above. Use both stranded together as one for double-stranding. You will use about 60% of the ball for each hat. If using two different balls of the same brand, you will use about 30% for each.

Sc = Single crochet
Double-stranding yarn is called marled yarn. This is what it means.
Use 5 mm / H/8 crochet hook.
Note: Use a stitch marker for the last stitch of each round as the entire hat is made with a continuous circle so there is no slip stitching.
Ch 4, join with sl st to beg of ch to form ring.
1st rnd: Ch 1, 6 sc in ring. Do not join, use the continuous method. Use stitch marker to keep the pattern round counts. 6 sc.
See the video if you don't understand the continuous method.
2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. 12 sc.
3rd rnd: *1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around. 18 sc.
4th rnd: *1 sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around. 24 sc.
5th rnd: *1 sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around. 30 sc.
6th rnd: *1 sc in each of next 4 s., 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around. 36 sc.
7th rnd: *1 sc in each of next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around. 42 sc.
8th rnd: *1 sc in each of next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around. 48 sc.
9th rnd: *1 sc in each of next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around. 54 sc.
10th rnd: *1 sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around. 60 sc.
11th to 15th rnds: 1 sc in each sc around. 60 sc.
For the next round of the hat, I want to increase the hat size by 4 stitches. If it fits, just do 1 sc in each st around.
16th rnd: (2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 14 sts) 4 times. 64 sc.
17th to 25th rnds: Sc in each sc around. 64 sc. Measure hat on the head after 25th rounds. Daniel and I have 27 rounds to get it to match our ears. Stop when you are happy with the length or prefer a brim that flips up.
Fasten off, and weave in ends.
Original Beanie Hat 2011
I created this hat for Daniel back in 2010/2011. It was double-stranded and used a discontinued yarn called Bernat Mosaic yarn. One of my personal issues is hating the slip stitching in a hat. At the time, I wasn't strong enough in crochet to understand how to change things up to avoid things I don't enjoy. This is the Crochet Simple Beanie. It can be done for women too, but it was made for Daniel.

Hi! Do you have any tutorials that might work to add a brim to this beanie? Thanks
Mikey says
No I kept it really basic. I'm sorry.
