Crochet Breakaway Waves Blanket
When I stumbled across the Bernat Baby Blanket Stripes yarn in Tiny Teal, I immediately knew I wanted to crochet a chevron wave blanket with it. Sometimes the yarn directs me what to do. I really love when inspiration hits that way! So I hope you enjoy my Breakaway Waves Blanket as much as I do.
I wanted to do larger color-block style section, so paired it up with Bernat Blanket yarn in Light Teal to crochet this design. The name Breakaway Waves came because when my son looked at it, he said it reminded him of crashing waves, and the little foamy whitecaps that are formed in the water.
This is a dense blanket, alternating the Bean Stitch with a section of front post stitches for a deep texture.

Multiples
The multiples in the beginning chain are 23 + 2 to change the width of the blanket.
Each section of the blanket uses a full ball of yarn, but changing size will affect the yarn usage. Also, I did play yarn chicken with the striped yarn. I’m a pretty average crocheter. If you are loose, you may want to drop a hook size. Also, if you run a few stitches short, simply switch colors a bit sooner.

I also have an issue with row 12. I tried to just crochet through the pattern a few lines and by row 15 there is a big issue at the end of the row I only have 5 loops left to go into, instead of the required 9 so my guess is a stitch is missing after every peak.
I don't like the way it looks and will pull it out back to line 11 and then try and work the pattern adding the extra front post dobule crochet. If that is not successful I will just do the Bean stitch chevron as it looks really nice.

I'm going to redraw the chart again in computer format. This pattern has been a real pain for me personally. Seems a lot of people are slipping up as my instructions are not clear enough or I have errors that I cannot see. Redrawing it will help me out... If I Cannot solve it, I'll just remove the pattern as it's the best way to eliminate problems.
Mikey says
I have located the errors, There were multiple. I pulled out the book and examined what I was doing. Explaining it... and doing it are two different things. I will have the revision up in the next hour. I am going to photograph my test swatch.

Great! PLEASE don’t remove it. Jeanne worked with me and I got it. I love this blanket! So did my brother who I gifted it to!

Thanks for checking it over! I tried a few times and figured out that I did need to add the front post double and it lines up now. I may have had an error following row 11 the first time and not realized it. My blanket is 2/3 done and I am on my final section of the front post doubles. The blanket does have some weight to it. I plan to do an edge around in single crochet to even out the edges and finish it off. I am an intermediate crochet person so the edge helps hide any unevenness.

You're welcome. It was a tough one to word out, at least to me.

I'd love to share a picture of how mine turned out, is there somewhere I can send one? Its a gorgeous pattern once you get the hang of it!
Mikey says
Yes, our email is in the contact us already if you wish to send us an email. Would love to see. Michael.

I sent in pictures of my finished Breakaway waves blanket. I'm happy with it 🙂 I used the stripes yarn

In the 12th row it seems like the * section should include the FPdc, otherwise the hdc3tog doesn't end up lining up with the valley everytime. Am I wrong?
Sonya says
I’m struggling with row 12 as well. I’ve pulled out and started over four times already because it wasn’t lining up correctly. This last attempt, I thought I was close to the mark until near the end where I now have four stitches remaining. I’m not sure what I did wrong or what to do to fix it. Like the above post, I struggled to land in the valley at the proper time. Everything was even until row 12. This is my first chevron project, so I’m learning a lot through trial and error. Does anyone have a count of how many stitches should be at the end of each row?
Melynda, Did adding the FPDC to each section solve the issue for you?
Melynda says
On row 12 I included the FPdc in the repeat sequence and it seems to have worked for me. like this:
*FPdc in next st, (hdc in next
st, FPdc in next st) 4 times, hdc3tog, (FPdc in next st, hdc in
next st) 4 times, FPdc in next st,** 3 hdc in next st; rep from *
3 more times...
I have not checked out the revisions she's made yet, but as the blanket is nearly done I figured I should keep what I was doing consistent. I wish it had a diagram with it as I always find it easier to have those with the written pattern. I do love how its turned out though! I added a small border on mine 🙂

Good morning! I am having the same issue and added the FPdc in the next stitch after the peak, which made everything line up. When I get to the end of the row, however, I am not ending with a FPdc prior to the 2 hdcs in the last stitch. Did that happen to you or did it all line up by the end and make both ends symmetrical? I appreciate any feedback you have at this point as it sounds like you are well into the project. I love it but am frustrated with this one row :-).
Rebecca says
I love this pattern, and the stitch. Am I counting wrong, tho? When I follow the directions, I end up with 6 stitches left at the end. When i skip 3 instead of 2 it works better. Please help tell me what I'm doing wrong.
Mikey, The Crochet Crowd says
I'm really not sure. Can you just remove out the extra chains left at the end to get your balance?
