Crochet Color Block Dishcloth in 2 Ways + Tutorial

A tutorial request came in for this Red Heart Color Block Dishcloth pattern. I provided secondary options, resulting in another pattern based on this one that you can also download. It's the Lily Sugarn Cream Extended Double Crochet Dishcloth. The tutorial covers both.

Knowing this is hard to see in tutorial format. I used Lily Sugarn Cream yarn instead. Use those 100% cotton for dishwashing needs, such as Bernat Handicrafter or Peaches and Creme yarn.

Second Option

Knowing the double crochet row with chain one spaces provides too much space for regular yarn like Lily Sugarn Cream, I decided to make extended double crochet stitches to fill in the spaces. You will also see that the border I did 3 single crochet in the corners on the final round as well.

Materials

Lily Sugar’n Cream Yarn. 71g / 2.5 oz, 109 meters / 120 yards

A - Robin’s Egg, 1 Ball

Hook = 4.5 mm / G/6

Scarf = 7” wide x 6.5” long.

Abbreviations

  • Ch(s) = Chain(s)
  • Dc = Double Crochet
  • Ext dc = Extended Double Crochet
  • Rem = Remain(ing)
  • Rep = Repeat
  • Rnd = Round(s)
  • Sc = Single Crochet
  • Sk = Skip

Instructions

With A, ch 22.

1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. Turn. 21 sc.

2nd row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each st across. Turn.

3rd row: Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1), *skip next st, dc in next st, ch 1; repeat from * to last 2 sts, skip next st, dc in last st. Turn.

See video tutorial for a demonstration of the extended double crochet used below.

4th row: Ch 1. 1 sc in first dc. 1 ext dc using next sc 2 rows below encasing ch-1 space inside the dc. *1 sc in next dc. 1 ext dc using next sc 2 rows below encasing ch-1 space inside the dc. Rep from * across. 1 sc in 3rd ch of beg ch-4. Turn.

5th row: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn.

Rep 2nd to 5th row (3 more times). Do not fasten off or turn at the end of the last row.

Border

1st rnd: Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc). 1 sc evenly spaced

around edges, working (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner, slip st in first sc. Turn.

2nd rnd: Ch 1, [sc in each st to next ch-2 space, (3 sc) in ch-2 space] around, slip st in first sc.
