    Crochet Ruana Poncho Pattern

The Crochet Caron Ruana was probably the biggest reaction during the live reveal at the Secret Reveal Party. It is featuring Caron Sprinkle Cakes.

    XS - M = 5 Balls

    L - 5 XL = 6 Balls

This is a one-piece garment that starts at the back and then divides off at the shoulders to have two panels drape in front. Touched with fringe at the front, it's really stunning!

Ive read the pattern many times and it not making sense. when it says: Next row: (RS). Ch 2. 1 hdc in first sl st. (Sl st in next hdc. 1 hdc in next sl st) 18 (20-20-21) times (neck edge). Turn. Leave rem sts unworked. Am I to ignore this and just count the 41 for each front panel?

This confused me too until I saw the finished product. Think of a squared-off U for the front layout. You will be completing one front with the steps you cite. Then, later you go back and do the same thing leaving a gap in-between for the neck. If you add up the stitches for the two halves plus the gap for the neck, you should come back to the total number of stitches you started with at the beginning.

I have crocheted this poncho and have done the back and right front and I have run out of yarn. I used the recommended 5 balls of Caron Sprinkle Cakes. I have counted my stiches over and keep reading the pattern to see where I may have gone wrong. I am making the smallest size. Do you have any suggestions? Has anyone else found that 5 balls is too little?

Yes. I made the smallest size and had to buy two additional cakes, though I used very little of the last one.

Thank you so much for the tutorial for the Ruana. First I'm left handed. I figured out the pattern fairly easily. When it came to step two I was baffled. I read and re-read. Crocheted and pulled out the stitches. I did some digging and found your tutorial. It was so simple to follow what you were saying. (It doesn't make sense in print) I am now speedily on the right front.
      again thank you.

Could you add the measurements for the width of the ruana? I want to substitute yarn that I have instead of the Sprinkle Cakes. Thanks!

      Hello Mikey,
Thank you for such a great tutorial on You Tube on this Ruana. I have a concern as a beginner, I'm looking at your video and it shows the various numbers in the pattern that coincide with the sizes, your pattern is clear however the one in the link you put there is NOT the same. Please have someone post the correct link for the Ruana poncho. I've purchased all the yarn and now need to start. Thank you.
      Sincerely,
      Nancy-Jo Nunez.

Hi, I'm totally in love with this pattern, but I have a couple questions. I'm making the largest size and I was wondering if 28" is long enough for the back and front sides. I can see it for the child sizes, but for someone who is a large person, 28" would only rest mid back or so. I am adjusting mine and gonna see how that goes. Also, I'm really confused with the front. I am still learning how to read patterns. The Shape Neck section doesn't make sense to me. If anyone could take a picture or a short tutorial on this section, it would be so appreciated. Thank you for these wonderful patterns. I'm constantly trying new things and have branched out from just making blankets.

My granddaughters saw this pattern on the reveal this weekend but I am allergic to wool and also think that the pattern might be a little bulky for them as they are all three very dainty in stature xs and s ages 18-20. If I change to a #5 acrylic yarn do you think it would work ok. I don't usually make things like this. I've been crocheting for 50 years and don't ever remember making a poncho or sweater. Lol.

Melody, this pattern would probably be great in acrylic. ( I dislike wool.) I'm thinking about Lion Brand Jiffy, which I think is a 5 or 6. A finer yarn will give a thinner fabric, and make up in a smaller size. The key will be to check size as you go. (If your gauge is different, make sure the size is the same as you work, and if not adjust accordingly, i.e. if the pattern uses 30 stitches to go 20 inches, but you use 20 stitches to get to that size, use 20 stitches and adjust the counts accordingly.) This pattern may be great for your first adventure into clothes because it reads like a blanket pattern. Good luck. And don't give up.

I like this on either a man or woman. I like following your videos especially as I'm a UK person who accidentally learnt US terms so get so confused on the written instructions! Also, its really nice following with a calm voice it's really reassuring for a beginner like me 😀 The poncho itself, I would actually sew the sides up when I make for my bf but can see it in many colours and even small pompoms instead of tassels for a playful approach
