Crochet Ruana Poncho
The Crochet Caron Ruana was probably the biggest reaction during the live reveal at the Secret Reveal Party. It is featuring Caron Sprinkle Cakes. The colour you see is called Birthday Cake.
XS – M = 5 Balls
L – 5 XL = 6 Balls
This is a one-piece garment that starts at the back and then divides off at the shoulders to have two panels drape in front. Touched with fringe at the front, it’s really stunning!

I love this pattern! I completed the project with Pecan Fudge Sprinkle Cakes and I have received lots of comments, like, “will you make one for me too?”
Ive read the pattern many times and it not making sense. when it says: Next row: (RS). Ch 2. 1 hdc in first sl st. (Sl st in next hdc. 1 hdc in next sl st) 18 (20-20-21) times (neck edge). Turn. Leave rem sts unworked. Am I to ignore this and just count the 41 for each front panel?
This confused me too until I saw the finished product. Think of a squared-off U for the front layout. You will be completing one front with the steps you cite. Then, later you go back and do the same thing leaving a gap in-between for the neck. If you add up the stitches for the two halves plus the gap for the neck, you should come back to the total number of stitches you started with at the beginning.
I have crocheted this poncho and have done the back and right front and I have run out of yarn. I used the recommended 5 balls of Caron Sprinkle Cakes. I have counted my stiches over and keep reading the pattern to see where I may have gone wrong. I am making the smallest size. Do you have any suggestions? Has anyone else found that 5 balls is too little?
Yes. I made the smallest size and had to buy two additional cakes, though I used very little of the last one.
Thank you so much for the tutorial for the Ruana. First I’m left handed. I figured out the pattern fairly easily. When it came to step two I was baffled. I read and re-read. Crocheted and pulled out the stitches. I did some digging and found your tutorial. It was so simple to follow what you were saying. (It doesn’t make sense in print) I am now speedily on the right front.
again thank you.
Lefty Jo
Could you add the measurements for the width of the ruana? I want to substitute yarn that I have instead of the Sprinkle Cakes. Thanks!
Hello Mikey,
Thank you for such a great tutorial on You Tube on this Ruana. I have a concern as a beginner, I’m looking at your video and it shows the various numbers in the pattern that coincide with the sizes, your pattern is clear however the one in the link you put there is NOT the same. Please have someone post the correct link for the Ruana poncho. I’ve purchased all the yarn and now need to start. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Nancy-Jo Nunez.
Can the ruana be made by using 2 strands of yarn instead of bulky?
Hi, I’m totally in love with this pattern, but I have a couple questions. I’m making the largest size and I was wondering if 28″ is long enough for the back and front sides. I can see it for the child sizes, but for someone who is a large person, 28″ would only rest mid back or so. I am adjusting mine and gonna see how that goes. Also, I’m really confused with the front. I am still learning how to read patterns. The Shape Neck section doesn’t make sense to me. If anyone could take a picture or a short tutorial on this section, it would be so appreciated. Thank you for these wonderful patterns. I’m constantly trying new things and have branched out from just making blankets.
Mikey is planning on making a tutorial video very soon for this one.
Thank you so much. I am trying to figure it out. But failing so far. 🙂 Thank you for all you guys do.
Please make a tutorial for this pattern. I have started and am very confused on the “neck shaping” part of the pattern. Thank you in advance!
I would very much appreciate a tutorial. So far the only things I’ve crocheted are items with tutorials from Crochet Crowd. You are awesome and I so love the way you teach.
Tutorial PLEASE & can i make this in the caron cake ?
Every pattern is better with a Mikey tutorial! (Kinda like the old margarine ad, Everything’s better with Blue Bonnet on it! This pattern jumped out & said make me for yourself. Please make a tute for me & all of the Crowd kingdom. Thanks!
Yes, please do a tutorial for the Ruana Poncho!!
I don’t read patterns and I’m in love with this!!
Please do a Tutorial !!!!!! Thank You
I started this yesterday after I picked up 2 sprinkle cakes bc I wanted to see how the yarn worked up. It is so seriously easy. It should be labeled a beginner level pattern. I am doing mine in Mocha, but I might add in birthday or vanilla.
I am thinking about doing one in Oolong for my sister for her birthday.
This is such a wonderful looking project and I would love a tutorial on this. I make mostly blankets and hats so something else intimidates me. Your tutorials give me the courage to try something new.
I would love a tutorial on this ruana! I am a big fan Mikey!

YES! I’d love a tutorial, please!
Can you increase the width of the prayer shawl? I would like to do it with maybe 401 chain and 199 spaces. Any help would be appreciated, I would be using Caron Cakes, and maybe two whole cakes.
Oops, I asked my question about the Prayer Shawl in the wrong place.?

I have never made anything that I can wear and I only make things following your tutorials. I would love to have your tutorial for this!
Yes pls and tysm for all your Tutorials, you are the BEST.
My granddaughters saw this pattern on the reveal this weekend but I am allergic to wool and also think that the pattern might be a little bulky for them as they are all three very dainty in stature xs and s ages 18-20. If I change to a #5 acrylic yarn do you think it would work ok. I don’t usually make things like this. I’ve been crocheting for 50 years and don’t ever remember making a poncho or sweater. Lol.
Melody, this pattern would probably be great in acrylic. ( I dislike wool.) I’m thinking about Lion Brand Jiffy, which I think is a 5 or 6. A finer yarn will give a thinner fabric, and make up in a smaller size. The key will be to check size as you go. (If your gauge is different, make sure the size is the same as you work, and if not adjust accordingly, i.e. if the pattern uses 30 stitches to go 20 inches, but you use 20 stitches to get to that size, use 20 stitches and adjust the counts accordingly.) This pattern may be great for your first adventure into clothes because it reads like a blanket pattern. Good luck. And don’t give up.
I LOVE the poncho and am new to crocheting. It would be great if you did a tutorial!
I never did a crochet a long. I would love the tutorial.

Thank you for all you do for us. I would love to see a tutorial for this one as I understand the pattern right up to the split at the shoulders and my daughter and I are so looking forward to sporting these this fall
Oh this is spectacular! My 2 close friends ride horses and do ride shows- they call these blanket shawls. She would love one of these.
I can’t wait for yarn to be here.
I also love the way you explain the patterns and thusly give us the confidence to be able to accomplish even difficult patterns. Please do a tutorial. Thanks
I like this on either a man or woman. I like following your videos especially as I’m a UK person who accidentally learnt US terms so get so confused on the written instructions! Also, its really nice following with a calm voice it’s really reassuring for a beginner like me 😀 The poncho itself, I would actually sew the sides up when I make for my bf but can see it in many colours and even small pompoms instead of tassels for a playful approach
Yes I would love a video! U make it so easy for me to learn since I have only been crocheting for only a year and almost 3 months!!!!
Yes please. I’m still having trouble reading patterns and diagrams for that matter. Please do a tutorial. And by the way LOVED ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ The live reveal. I could not be in Toronto on Saturday.
