Crochet Ladders and Shell Stitch

This stitching combination has a fabulous array of using crochet shells and double crochet posts to separate the shells from each other.

Technically speaking, it's just a one-row repeat once you get the first row done.

Instructions

The stitch multiple is 8 + 6

Using any size hook and yarn that is recommended on the ball band. The demonstration is using 8 mm / L Hook with Bernat Softee Chunky yarn.

  • Dc = Double Crochet
  • Rep = Repeat
  • Shell = 5 dc into same st.
  • Sk = Skip
  • Sp = Space

Chain in multiples of 8. Add 6 chains at the end of the chain for balance.

1st row: 1 dc in back loop of the 6th ch from hook. *Sk 2 ch, shell into next st, sk 2 ch, 1 dc into next ch, ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 dc into next ch. Rep from * across. Turn.

2nd row: Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc + ch 1 sp), sk next st, 1 dc into next st. *Sk 2 sts, shell into next st (middle st of shell below), sk 2 sts, 1 dc into next, ch 1, sk 1 st, 1 dc into next. Rep from * across. Turn.

Repeat 2nd row until you get the desired length of your project. This project really doesn't need a border.

I have only been crocheting a week. How can I change the colors in the rows of ladder and shells pattern?

In this case, most likely not. You would need a separate ball of yarn for each shell column and each ladder. That's possible but because the shell work is so lacey, the carried up yarns will be really exposed and noticeable. Your fingers would catch on them if it's like an afghan.
