The 5th in the Hugs & Kisses series of patterns. This pretty lapghan blanket is perfect for a chilly afternoon to snuggle under with a cup of tea and a good book.
Hugs & Kisses Around the Block is the rectangle from the middle version of the design that consists of X's and O's to represent the Hugs & Kisses. I used 3 Caron Big Cakes to crochet this blanket. You can use your favourite yarn to make it bigger or smaller. You are the artist.

Caron Big Cakes, 300 g/ 10.5 oz, 551 m/ 603 yds
- Blue Hawaiian - 3 Balls
Hook: 5.5 mm / Size I/9
Gauge: 12 sc and 13 rows = 4” [10 cm]
Blanket Size: 36" x 46"
Abbreviations
- Beg = Beginning

- Dc = Double Crochet

X-st: Skip next st, dc into next st, cross back and dc into skipped st; 1 x-st made.
Pc (popcorn stitch): Work 4 dc into the next st, drop the loop from the hook, insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first double crochet of the group; 1 pc made.
Instructions
Pattern Note: Rounds 13 & 21 are identical to Round 5. The exception is that they have an extra HDC before each corner. This keeps the pattern in balance.
- Small Repeat is 2nd to 4th rnds.
- Large Repeat is 6th rnd to 12th rnds.
Rnd 1: Ch 26, dc in 5th ch from hook and each ch to next to last ch, (dc, ch 1, 4 dc, ch 1, dc) in last ch, turn to work in opposite side of ch, dc in next 20 ch, (dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in last ch, sl st to top of beg ch 3, sl st into ch-1 sp. - 52 dc, 4 ch 1.
Small Repeat Begins Here
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in same sp, sc in next 22 st, 3 sc in ch-1 sp, sc in next 4 st, 3 sc in ch-1, sc in next 22 st, 3 sc in ch 1, sc in next 4 st, 1 sc in same sp as beg sc, sl st to beg sc. - 64 sc.
This is when I like to place a stitch marker in the middle stitch of each corner from here out to keep track of my place.
Rnd 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc, now and throughout), 2 dc in same sp as join, [sk next st, dc in next st, dc in skipped st (X-st), rep from * to corner st, 5 dc in corner], rep on all 4 sides, ending with 2 dc in same sp as beg 3 dc, sl st to beg dc. - 30 X-st, 20 dc.
Rnd 4: Rep round 2. – 88 sc

Rnd 13: Pc round. This is a rep of round 5 except you will have an extra hdc right before you get to each corner. – 56 pc, 128 hdc.

Rnd 17: Rep round 9.
Rnd 18 - 20: Small repeat.
Rnd 21: Pc round. Repeat Rnd 5 with this exception. Ch 2, hdc in same sp as join, hdc [*hdc, pc, hdc] extra hdc before corner, 3 hdc in corner. – 84 pc, 188 hdc.
Rnd 22 - 28: Large repeat.
Rnd 29: Pc round. Rep round 5. – 116 pc, 244 hdc.
Rnd 30 - 36: Large repeat.
Rnd 37: Pc round. Rep round 13. – 144 pc, 304 hdc.

ok am i just dense or what?i'm on row 5 of this pattern and the numbers are NOT adding up for me.it says to have 88 sc on row 4 which i have,then on row 5 the repeat is hdc,pc,hdc ok i got that but the stitch count is 28 pc and 68 hdc. HOW!? there is no way to have just 10 pc per side and 4 on either end without skipping stitches.please help

The repeat is hdc, pc, hdc... so there will be 2 hdc between each pc. hdc, pc, hdc, hdc, pc, hdc, hdc, pc, hdc... etc.

I think (not 100% Positive) that I saw that there is plans in the works to do a diagram, It will be a bit before it gets done because there are so many behind the scene steps to go through.

Mikey, A diagram would be nice, but I would settle for the total number of stiches per row, as designated in the Small and large Repeat. I had to frog almost my entire blanket because it got so out of "square". Having just the count on the popcorn row is not very helpful.

Thanks. Leave it with me. It takes me about 5 - 8 hours to draw a diagram. I have to find that time in my schedule before I can commit to it. I'm not very fast the computerized diagram stuff.

Well shoot! I am on row 29 and cant go further without some row counts. I have been counting the Xs and 0s from the picture on the pattern but cant make them out now. Is there a formula you used to increase the size of the blanket? Almost anything would help.

There is no formula, but I'm sure by now you have seen the repeat... sc, X, sc, pc, sc, X, sc, dc. Just keep going and you will be fine! Don't fret over the counts at this point. You are already more then halfway! Just keep your sides even and it will all work out. Fake a stitch if you have to. 🙂
