I recently discovered the Crochet Bargello Make Waves Blanket; the link is below. However, I couldn't see myself wanting to do it, as the visual interest wasn't enough for me to continue the pattern. My connections were loose, and I wanted to change up the pattern to give it texture and tightness.
I created this Version of the Crochet Bargello Cross Stitch Wave Lap Blanket.
I changed up some things to make crocheting faster as well. I will show you below.
Changes
- Once you get to row 2, each row is the same. There is no need to stress; go with it.
- I changed out the double crochet and switched them to double crochet front posts to make the texture and colour pop more.
- The top section has the equivalent of 10 double crochets across. I switched it out so the middle section has cross stitches instead. This gives it more texture and is easy to follow.
- I changed chain 3 to chain 2 to tighten up the connection spots. There are no gaps.
- The location of the slip stitching when stepping up or down was changed to a ch-2 sp instead of using chain work to make it much faster to locate and also connect better.
- It's tight so baby toes and fingers don't go between stitches.
Crochet Diagram
The stitch multiple to change the size is the same as the original of 53 chains + 2. Each repeat is approximately 8" in width.
The crochet diagram is ready to print when you are ready to try it. Just click the picture below to begin.

Instructions
Notes:
- Chain 2 counts as a space in the future rows. See the diagram above for location. Row 3 is provided on the diagram to better illustration what the stitchwork directions are in both directions.
- On the diagram, I nearly missed the skipped chain on the original sample. On my diagram above, I put the skipped chain for the 1st row in red to call attention to it. I have bold those instructions below to ensure you don't miss it.

Mikey, I have a question. In Row 2, the directions say to chain after the dcfp and then slip stitch. However, further down directions say dcfp, then sl st and then ch. Is this correct or should the chain be before the slip stitch. I hope this isn't confusing the way I wrote it.

What color is color B? I only see that it says RHSS jumbo. Thanks!

I have updated the article. Thanks for this note.
