Crochet a Beachy Keen Tote Bag

When Mikey crocheted the Beachy Keen Cover-Up, I thought it would be fun to crochet a matching tote bag.  I used the same Bernat Maker Home Dec yarn in Aqua. Get the Beachy Keen Tote Bag pattern.

My finished bag measures 12" x 12", not including the handles.  I used 150 grams of the 250-gram ball, so there is plenty of extra if you'd like to make your tote bag bigger.

  • 1 Ball Bernat Maker Home Dec
  • Crochet Hook Size L 8.0mm
  • Stitch Marker
  • Darning Needle

Bottom:

Chain 33.  Sc into 2nd chain from hook and each chain across.  Do not turn at the end in the usual way.  Turn so that now you will be working on the opposite side of the chain.  Sc back across the free loops of the beginning chain to the start.  Place stitch marker in last sc.  - 64 sc.

Working in continuous rounds, sc into each sc for a total of 4 rows, moving marker up each time to keep track.  Sl st to close rounds after the 4th round.

Pattern:

Round 1 - Chain 4 (counts as dc + ch-1), *skip 1 stitch, dc into next stitch, ch-1.  Repeat * around.  Sl st to 3rd chain of beginning ch-4.

Round 2 - Ch-1, sc into each dc and ch-1 space around.  Sl st to beginning sc.

Rounds 3 - 22, repeat rounds 1 and 2.

Round 22 - Ch-1, sc in each stitch around.  Sl st to beginning sc.

Handles:

Note: At this point, your beginning should still be near the side edge of the bag.  If not, you will need to adjust the number of sc's to center the handles to your bag.

Round 1 - Ch-1, sc in the same stitch and next 9 stitches.  Ch-50, skip 15 stitches, sc into the next 17 stitches, ch-50, skip 15 stitches, sc into the remaining 7 stitches.  Sl st to beginning sc.

Round 2 - Ch-1, sc in same stitch and next 9 stitches, skip the first chain, sc into the next 48 chains, skip the last chain, sc into next 17 sc, skip the first chain, sc into the next 48 chains, skip the last chain, sc into remaining 7 sc.  Sl st to beginning sc.

Round 3 - Ch-1, sc in same stitch and next 9 stitches, skip next sc, sc into the next 46 sc, skip next sc, sc into next 17 sc, skip next sc, sc into the next 46 sc, skip next sc, sc into remaining 7 sc.  Sl st to beginning sc.  Finish off.

If you are interested in a wider bag, then start with a longer chain keeping it odd, for an even number of beginning single crochets.  If you would like a taller bag, then work more pattern rounds.

Hi. I just started to make this bag. Is there an error in the pattern? For the body section, in round 1, it says to "dc in next stitch, ch1" and repeat. Shouldn't we be skipping a stitch? It says to skip 1 at the beginning of the instructions for round 1, but the skip 1 stitch isn't in between the *'s.

the skip at the beginning is because they are counting the ch 4 as a stitch so you wouldn't stitch in that same one. That being said, I've only made the top but I think you're right you would be skipping a stitch I will fix it, thanks.

Great morning! I just want to let you know that I absolutely LOVE this pattern. I had been looking for a pattern for a tote bag for a few months. I started one and pulled it out because it was going to be too big. I also considered other shapes, however it would have been time consuming. So I decided on this pattern. Thus far I have made 3 totes in the past 2 weeks. I just finished the 3rd. It works up so quick and easy. I can't thank you enough for this marvelous thing. ***I need to make 2 more. (I'm started the 4th now.) These are going to be a gift for my bridesmaids, as I am getting married spring 2020*** I'm also going to crochet their initials & a single heart and have them sewn onto the bags along with a lining that has a recipe for friendship. Thank you for being a part of my special day. Note: variations that I made...I used 2 strands of yarn - 1 cotton and 1 acrylic. I used a size "K" hook. I did a chain 75 for the straps. So very excited. Thank you again.
