This 26" long adult crochet spiral elf hat was designed to bring some fun for Christmas. Using Caron One Pound yarn, this hat is a continuous spiral with six different colours simultaneously.
The brim comprises double-stranding Caron One Pound white yarn with Bernat Pipsqueak yarn. Bernat Pipsqueak is discontinued, but you may find another eyelash fluffy yarn to play with.
Due to the number of colours, you will notice that the yarn balls don't use too much of each colour. I don't know the breakdown in yards per colour though.

What is The Camel Stitch?
The camel stitch is half double crochet on the back bar. It's done in this continuous round cowl. This is the 1 O'Go Wonder Camel Stitch Cowl.
Colours shown in the hat are as follows:
- White (for brim only with Caron One Pound and Bernat Pipsqueak Together)
- Soft Sage
- Soft Pink
- Grass Green
- Rose
- Red
- Off White
For the brim, use 4.5 mm / G/6 hook.
Ch 64 and join with sl st to beg chain to form ring. Careful not to twist the chain.
1st rnd: Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), 1 dc in each ch around. 64 dc.
2nd to 4th rnds: Ch 2, 1 dcbp in the first st, 1 dcfp in the next st. *1 dcbp in next st, 1 dcfp in next st. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to beg dc. 64 sts.
Fasten off at the end of the brim to get ready for the continuous spiral.
Starting of the body of the hat. You have two choices to start.
Switch to 5 mm / H/8 Crochet hook for the remaining of the hat.
The first version is the Rainbow Start that comes out of the brim. You can never go around the hat completely from the start to the end of the round, as the rest of the 5 colours need to follow around. However, you have to keep an eye on the start of the round to know when to start decreasing stitches.
The first round from the brim, you are just going to half double crochet most of the way around but you have to add in the other colours as the first colour, shown in light blue follows over top of the other colours that you have put into position.
The second way to start is to do a helix start. Suggested by a local crocheting friend here at home.
In this version, the 6 colours don't start at the same spot on the brim. They are roughly 10 stitches apart from each other. This allows all 6 colours to gradually spiral instead of making a rainbow shape.
Once you are started with all colours, you want to treat it the same way for the remaining of the hat.
Once all colours are in motion, only the first colour (light blue in this case) ever does any decrease in the hat.
You will see the first colour around the attaching of the brim, and then twice after that. Then as the blue comes back around, you begin decreasing only the blue. Due to eliminating stitches in the blue only, the rest of the colours on top of it automatically have the stitches missing to follow the stitches around. Remaining colours never have a stitch decrease.
Watch the brim of the hat where the end of the round is to know when to apply the blue decreasing.
You will notice the decrease is not a multiple of 64 chains. I did that intentionally, so the hat will be longer. At the end of a blue round, you will have odd stitches left; ignore it. When you start the decrease again in the future, restart from scratch as it's suggesting. If I made the hat a multiple of 64 stitches, the hat would be about 6" shorter.
At the tip of that, you will stop when there's just one stitch of each of the 6 left the end. Gather the stitches and pull remaining hole closed.
A six inch pom pom is sewn to the tip of the hat.
