Have you ever looked at an independent yarn shop and loved the yarn but were unsure what to crochet? Yep... you're not alone. In my recent adventure to Alaska, I finally bought yarn to design hats with skinny yarn. Why? Because my partner, Daniel, doesn't like chunky hats. He wants the warmth without the bulk. I created the Kroy Socks Adult Beanie Pattern, which you can download for free, too!
This led me back to my yarn collection, where I re-looked at Patons Kroy Socks yarn. I have plenty of it but without a plan. Kroy Socks yarn is a bit thinner than the yarn I bought at The Musk Ox Farm in Palmer, Alaska, which simply meant another new design had to be done.
You need about 200 yards of this thin yarn to make an adult beanie. I will keep this in mind in the future. That's why you need just over one ball of Kroy Socks yarn to do this yarn. You run out in the brim region and need a bit of a second ball to finish it.
Daniel's new hat consists of fifty rounds. Very tiny stitches, but with the sock yarn, it's very light; it has 75% wool with 25% nylon. The nylon gives this a timeless use of a hat that will last years. It can withstand wearing and putting it away for the season and popping it back out next year.
Ensure to Do Gauge Check
Like anything wearable, you should gauge the stitches. Without gauging, my hands won't match your hands. Adjust your hook when necessary. Due to the size of the stitches, the gauge given for Daniel's hat is 2" x 2".
Size: Average Adult. This will shape your head and fall to the bottom of your earlobes.
You can make it longer, as you will have nearly a full ball of a second ball, or you can extend it lower by adding more brim.
Kroy Socks Yarn - 50 g / 1.75 oz , 152 m / 166 yds

This yarn is 75% wool and 25 Nylon.

Instructions
Tips:
- Due to the size of the stitches, it’s easy to skip a stitch accidentally. You may have skipped a stitch by accident if your counts are incorrect.
- The hat is worked in a continuous circle, with the stitch marker at the end of each round moved up to ensure accurate counts.
- The starting of each round is slightly different to prevent the growth of the hat from being obvious.
Magic Circles or Adjustable Rings are Easy
The adjustable circle you will do will have 8 single crochet instead of the 12 shown in the tutorial.
Create an adjustable ring (magic circle).
1st rnd: RS. 8 sc in an adjustable ring. 8 sc. Do not join. Work in a continuous round. Place a stitch marker on the last st and continue moving it up after each instruction.
2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. 16 sc.
3rd rnd: *1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. 24 sc.

I loved the way you explained the gauge swatch. I have never made one before because I just didn’t understand, now I do. Thanks
