Mikey never used the original Study Series blanket as a stitch-along. Initially asked by Yarnspirations to create a blanket using this yarn, it was decided in the end to abandon this pattern and move into a different direction. 'Stitch Happens!'.
It took Mikey four evenings to be able to make this throw from start to finish.
Bernat Maker was selected for this yarn. This yarn is cotton and nylon mix yarn. It has a stretchy and bounce feel to the yarn. It's one of my favourite brands for teaching people how to crochet and knit, as there is no plies of yarn to worry about. This yarn has excellent stitch definition, and with the cotton base to this yarn, it has a different feel from acrylic or polyester yarns we may be used to.
The final sample is 56" in diameter using Bernat Maker yarn. Knowing people don't want to waste yarn, two colours get close to the end of the ball, leaving a few feet. Colour C, Fawn and Colour D, Clay, get close. If you want to avoid paranoia and don't trust yourself, I could recommend you get two balls of these colours instead of just one.
Bernat Maker Yarn, 250g / 8.8 oz, 290 meters / 317 yards
A - Jam - 1 Ball
B - Hyacinth - 1 Ball
C - Fawn - 1 Ball (Yarn Chicken if the gauge isn’t followed)
D - Clay - 1 Ball (Yarn Chicken if the gauge isn’t followed)
E - Saffron - 1 Ball
F - Teal - 1 Ball
G - Lichen - 1 Ball
If you do not gauge and are too loose, C and D will run out of yarn. Consider buying a second ball to avoid disappointment.
Use 8 mm / L/11 Crochet Hook
Gauge 11 sts and 12.5 rows = 4” [10 cm] or size needed to obtain gauge.
I cannot recommend a gauge swatch that is strong enough on this. You will run out of yarn early if you are a loose crocheter. Adjust your hook accordingly.
Two Ways to Get the Pattern
The paid pattern includes the crochet diagrams and a blown-up photo gallery of the throw. The free version includes only the written instructions. Funds collected in the paid version are going towards medical costs as the diagrams are complicated for Mikey's hands to make and require therapy.

Notes
Ch 3 at the beginning of row counts as a double crochet.
Due to the finite amount of yarn in each shade, the pattern gauge must be matched to ensure successful results. Switching colour order during the pattern will result in yarn shortages.
In some rounds, the starting maybe after or before the slip stitching of the round below to prevent slip stitching lines from travelling up the same section throughout the throw.

Common Questions Will Be
- What are the instructions to square this off? There won't be additions to this pattern to make that happen. Due to the size of the circumference, it would take a lot of rounds and yarn to get it to go square.
- I want to make the circle bigger; how do you do that? I cannot provide that as the arc radius of the circle makes it impossible without custom-designing more rounds to make that happen. There's no easy repeating to go back to certain rounds and repeating instructions over again.
- How long does this take to make? It took me 4 evenings to do start to finish. The sizing of the yarn and hook size makes this throw get really big quickly.
- How long will the pattern be available? Indefinitely.
Crochet Throw Prototypes
Prototype 1 is the model that started this journey. The prototype measures 50" in diameter, but I expect it to be larger once the final yarn is chosen.
While the yarn and hook details aren't set in stone, the Caron Cotton Cakes used in the prototype could be a viable option. My approach to design involves capturing the stitch concept on paper first to explore color possibilities later. I envision a colourful, almost like a rain shower in the sunlight concept.
Original Prototype
Second prototype with the assigned yarn by Yarnspirations.
This was the original done with prototype yarn, and many of the colours never went to market. This means you can change the colours and have a different vibe.
Prototype 2 used discontinued yarn of Bernat Maker Home Dec. I chose colouring based on the pattern yield. I changed a few things to ensure I never exceeded one ball per colour.
This new prototype was 56" in diameter, and the colours were set.
Last year's stitch-along was the Study of Determination Crochet Blanket. The free pattern and tutorials are available for you at any time.
