The Study of Determination Blanket designed by Mikey. A sampler that makes synchronizing swimming look easy!

The pattern is a stitch-along and will release new sections every Thursday for August 2023. After August 2023, the design will be put into one mega pattern for download.
Mikey designed the afghan back in August 2022 and just made quick diagram notes for the design but when it came to the finished piece, it's been rough! Squeezing into a floatie is a lot easier! In the end, I determined to make the stitches work to do a 'ta dah' moment in the end.

UPDATED INFO
The sign-up announcement will start on Thursday, July 20, 2023.
The stitch-along starts officially on August 3, 2023. We delayed the start-up until after Canada Day and Independence Day because of respect for the Canadian and USA celebration holidays. The yarn is listed below if you want to collect your yarn at any time.

The blanket will be bold and a reason to reach for the stars. Like the guy in the picture, he's probably like me in reaching up and saying, "Great, the challenge has started, and, oh yeah, the buffet is open!" I can totally relate to him.

Yarn
This will be the regular stitch along with our friends at Yarnspirations when we get moving on this. We are too early to start sign-ups to have this pattern delivered to you each week.
I was looking for yarn that was more vibrant than Caron One Pound and rediscovered a yarn that I had just pushed aside back in 2013. You can see more about Red Heart Comfort here. The yarn line had fresher summery colours. It matched the concept that I had in my head.
There are six balls in total. The yardage seems to go on forever and ever! You know me, I love long-yardage yarn! You will have yarn left over for other projects.
The colours are as follows for Going Boldy, one ball each:
Hot Pink
Goldenrod
Petal Pink
Peacock
Charcoal
Gray
The colours are as follows for the Flower Vase, one ball of each:
Cream
Charcoal
Gray
Seafoam
Petal Pink
Hot Pink
I am still in the design stage and don't know what colour I use most. I will weigh my yarn and accurately guess the yardage per colour.

I was focused on doing cross-over stitches—variations of crisscrossing design.

I developed a stitch doing crisscrossing over 2 spaces. In person, is magnificent to look at. I'm unsure if the photo really captures it.
One of my favourite summer afghans of the past was the Juicy Fruits and Whipped Creme Throw. If you kick the model off the couch, you will see the entire blanket and the colours are vibrant and have a summer look to it. Yes, there's a tutorial for it too.
If you enjoy Stitch Alongs, you can see more than we have done below.

Chrissy Roberts says
I want to do this as a Pride throw in Hobii Horizon (color 12), each ball is 601 yards. How many balls would I need to accomplish all tutorials (56 rounds).?
Mikey says
I used Red Heart Comfort Yarn. Here is the stats per ball. Ball size Solids: 454 g/16 oz, 792 meters/867 yards
I used 6 colours but some of the balls, I used less than the full ball size. If you are just using 1 colour throughout, I would guestimate 7 to 8 of what you have. I don't know the break down per colour.
Hope this helps.
Linda Dossett says
Loved it. Well done both written and videos. Thank you!
Ruth Felix says
How many lessons are in the Study of Determination Blanket? I only have four. Is that the end? If there are more where can I find them?
Mikey says
there is only four. You've got it all now.
Melodie Stevens-Koo says
I made this in Ohio State University colors - scarlet and gray. I loved how it turned out.
Suki Longfellow says
Hi. I was wondering how big this is supposed to be at the end of week two? Usually, it says the measurements somewhere in the instructions, but I couldn't find it this time. Thanks, Suki
Wendy Maruna says
Measurement: Approx 22.5” [57cm] square is what week two states under the photo on page 5 of 11
Hope that helps. Happy Stitching
Patricia Schmidt says
Loving this stitch along. Extended double crochet has been difficult till I used stitch markers for each stitch on each side. Thank you so much for new techniques
Juliana says
I love the pattern, but those extended dc cross-stitches are a bugger. However, this is the first intermediate pattern I've done, so I'm basically here to learn new stitches. I know my stitch count is off, and I zoned out on rows 16-18 (did two sets), duh. Glad I'm using scrap yarn :). Once I feel more comfortable with the pattern, I'll make it for real. It really is beautiful.
Donna R says
I signed up for the crochet along, got a confirmation email that I was in, but I never got the instructions or chart. Mikey does a great job of explaining in the video, but it would be so helpful to get the promised email and pattern instructions to print.
Wendy Maruna says
We were able to link the landing page for the written pattern to our article. At the top of this page there is a black button that says “view pattern “. Scroll down on that page to find the “download lesson” button to get week one’s pdf
Happy Stitching
Debbie says
I just got the kit, there are 6 colors and each skein is 16 ozs. Size I hook. 'm still waiting for a written pattern. So far I have screenshot the diagram from the beginning of this video and printed it, I am working off of that,
Jessica says
Hello! I’m using scrap yarn on hand. Was there an update as to which color(s) were used most?
Wendy Maruna says
He doesn’t have exact amounts of each color used. But said he was very close to using a full skein of his color A for his pieces.
Tara Pierce says
How big will the finished blanket be?
Wendy Maruna says
56” is our final dimensions
Ann says
I sign up twice I haven't received my email with the pattern in it wonder when will I would receive it

Wendy Maruna says
Michael stated he has not gotten the written in his email yet. Hopefully we will have answers tomorrow. So very sorry I don’t have a solution to offer this evening.
Elaine Ruggiero says
Has there been any updates as to when the written pattern will be available? I signed up on July 20th and this is the first time I have never received the written pattern for any of the SAL I have done. It is frustrating!
JOANNE T KUNDRA says
Same here Lisa. Wish they would just post the written pattern for us to download and be done with it. Seems Yarnspirations can't handle the influx of emails.Joanne

I signed up for the crochet along beginning August 3rd. I can't find any confirmation that I have signed up
Mikey says
I don't have the access to Yarnspirations to check about your sign up. Just fire off a quick message to Yarnspiratons at this address: https://www.yarnspirations.com/contactus
Suki Longfellow says
'What time does this SAL start?
Mikey says
I'm not sure yet. I have emailed into Yarnspirations to request the time that the emails will be leaving today.
Nala says
Is there a way to get the pattern via a FB group or FB messenger? I no longer use email.
Wendy Maruna says
At this time, the only way the written will be distributed is via email. The an is for the emails to go out weekly.
In the future, the written will be available for download, but unsure of when that will be.
Jeanette L Wickersham says
I have signed up and have lots of stash yarn for this. What size crochet hook is needed? I did not see that noted anywhere; but I do have quite a few sets of crochet hooks, just need to know what size for the gauge.
Wendy Maruna says
I have that information. So glad you will be joining us.
Hook used with Red Heart Comfort: 5.5mm/I
Gauge: 13 sc and 14 rows = 4”[10 cm]
Barbara M. Riddle says
I have signed up for the Study of Determination crochet-along, but never received a confirmation email. I signed up several times since, and still no email confirmation. Could you check on that?
Wendy Maruna says
I am sorry to hear you haven’t gotten the email response yet. Our team doesn’t have the ability to view their email system, so their customer service team will need to assist you.
On their website, at the bottom of the webpages you will find a menu labeled “support” that when you click the plus sign ➕ will expand to show “contact us”.
Golda says
As Yarnspirations has been and is currently out of most of the Red Heart Comfort yarn, I purchased the Caron One Pound. I just need to know if I need to get more than one of any of the colors to have enough for this.
Thanks!
Wendy Maruna says
Some of the colors you won’t need the full ball, so you may need to sneak another color in place of one near the end. If you are okay with that you should be good with just one skein of each in Caron One Pound
Golda says
Thank you!
Golda says
As Yarnspirations is out of most of the colors for the stitch a long, do we need to buy extra of the Caron One Pound to have enough yarn for this? I've been on their notify list for several colors since this post first went up, so it doesn't look like they will be getting more of it anytime soon.
Ruth says
The Caron one pound is 812 yards/742 meters The Red Heart comfort is 867 yards/792 meters. Michael did say in his intro that you will probably have a little yarn leftover. I was able to get the yarn from Michael's Craft store website. They used a third party vendor that I don't know it was Agave. com. Maybe check both websites for pricing. If you sign up for Michael's emails they do send coupons, just like Joann's . Hope this helps.
Golda Peterson says
Thanks.
Suki says
Looks like I'd better get ready to work a LOT of ends in! LOL
Sheila says
How do I sign up for this CAL?
Wendy Maruna says
We will share the link for signing up on July 20th.
We will update this article with the link when it’s ready. So excited to get started stitching. 😀
Susan Glaser says
I would love to have the link for this beautiful stitch along.
Thank you so much for all your help
Susan Glaser
Mikey says
It should be available tomorrow. Tomorrow is the launch day for the program. Pattern will begin in the first week of August.
Elizabeth says
How and where can we sign up for study of determination crochet along?
Wendy Maruna says
We will share the link with it is ready for the sign ups. As of today the date is set to be July 20th and we will start the stitch along Aug 3rd.
At this time, we do not have the link available for sign ups.
Christine Brienzo says
Thank you for the info. I have been checking off and on today concerned I may have missed the sign up. Life has been getting in my way all day so now, at least, I have one less thing to worry about. Thank you for taking the time to let us know. Much appreciated!
Becky Oakland says
Yarnspirations has lost a lot of revenue by not having the yarn for this blanket in stock. I have checked numerous times and they never have it. Had to order from somewhere else.
Golda says
Where were you able to find it?
Jane Lange says
Mikey, the crochety crocheter here. I need a studio neon sign that says, “Shhh…..I’m counting”. On/off switch a must. Just need to flick it on BEFORE being interrupted and thrown off focus. Ever seen one?
Wendy Maruna says
That sounds like a fun addition to a crochet corner. Hope your search returns results for you
Marge says
I decided to use a single color this time because last year’s Study of Ombre looked amazing in a solid color. There is always enough variation in stitches to never get bored.
Sarah Oswald says
Can you use just 1 or 2 color instead of all those colors?
Mikey says
For sure. The tutorial is filmed in a solid colour. Colours are subjective. I don't know how much yarn you would need if you just using 1 ball or 2 for yardage.
Sarah Oswald says
Thank you for the info I greatly appreciate your answer!
Cheryl Slebodnik says
Ready to go,
Rachel G says
Hi Mikey, when will the gauge swatch information be released? I will need to use an alternate yarn and I’d like to start practice swatches. Thank you.
Mikey says
I'm not sure what Yarnspirations has on the landing page yet. Here are the details that you are looking for though:
Hook Size: 5.5 mm / I/9 Hook Susan Bates® Silvalume® crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.
MEASUREMENTS
Approx 56” x 56” [142 x 142 cm]
GAUGE
13 sc and 14 rows = 4” [10 cm]
Rachel says
Thank you!!!
Laurie says
I'm seeing all the colors sold out @ yarnspirations. Hoping they are back in stock soon - I'll get the pattern then wait for the restock. =(
Wendy Maruna says
We pushed off our start date to give them time to build the inventory. They are working on it for us.
🙂
I can’t wait to see people’s work on this one.
Juni Myers says
How do we sign up for the newsletter for The Crochet Crowd or get notifications for these events? I would like to join in the fun!
Wendy Maruna says
We will have sign ups for our summer stitch along. (Sign ups start July 6th)
We do not have a newsletter or anything similar. We don’t save/store people’s email addresses.
The best places to keep up with the latest news from The Crochet Crowd: our YouTube channels (Mikey uses the Community tab on the crochet channel frequently), our Facebook business page and our IG account.
Jennifer Hamilton says
Im hoping red heart/Yarnspirations restocks yarn as almost all colors are sold out or unavailable. 🙁
Im excited though to begin this. Ill search for substitutes
Mikey says
They will be. The official launch is July 6th. It should be restocked by the official announcement day.
Sandy says
Hi Mikey...
How does one measure a person for a "shrug"?
I know the concept, a rectangle then fold the ends to make sleeves. However... mine do not fit...
My niece is 2.6 yrs and her mom is only 85lbs. My desire is to make them matching shrugs, but, alas my measurements do not work!!! HELP!
Mikey says
Morning Sandy. I don't know this answer. I've never had this type of question before. I unfortunately never went to fashion school for human anatomy to have first have perspective to this. I'm sorry.
Amanda says
So we only need one ball of each of the 6 colors correct?
Wendy Maruna says
Correct. Six total skeins of Red Heart Comfort yarn one of each color.
Karen Duenas says
So excited for this one. I look forward to these every summer. Thank you Mikey and company for your continued dedication to creating crochet projects
Peg Murphy says
Love the look and colors of this project. I am a tad confused about yarn to get...RH Comfort is the one, correct? This is going to be fun. Thank you Mikey again for a beautiful afghan. Looking forward
Wendy Maruna says
Yes, Red Heart Comfort is the one suggested for this piece.
The inventory for purchase is expected to be replenished by the time we start with sign ups.
Felicia Jacobson says
I'm looking forward to trying this. I tend to lose interest if I can't figure it out, but I'm determined to try hard. I have to use similar colors from my stash (it's huge), so as not to stress out my hubby. Looking forward to July
Nancy Bell says
Hi Mikey! Going to use stash Red Heart With Love in bright bold colors! Look forward to hooking up this delightful afghan. Working on Jeanne’s Inspired by Joy and others at the moment.
Isabella Paterson says
Will you be doing videos each week I do hope so
Wendy Maruna says
Yes, the videos will release weekly with the written pattern for that week ?
Catherine F Wingfield-Yeatts says
I have to admit, sheepishly, that I love all of the examples. I can't wait to start it. I finished a Study in Texture last night. I'm working on A Study of Snow, a Study of Planet Earth, Gingerbread Tree Skirt, and some cat beds. Thanks so much for your energy, and enthusiasm for yarn and crocheting. Thanks again.
Leigh Couture says
Looks really cool! Sign me up please!
Nancy H says
Love the pattern! Can't wait to start. Thanks for your additional effort to create the Flower Vase colorway (love the name BTW). Sorry that harsh comments prompted more work on your part, but boy oh boy, fantastic result in your color choices. More inspiration for me in my future projects
Leah says
This is really cool looking! However, 4 of the 6 colors are not available at Yarnspirations. Will they be restocked? Thanks
Mikey says
They should be... I don't know when though.
Donna says
Looking forward to the summer stitch along!???
Sandy Ryan says
I usually prefer patterns that are tight, no gaps, but this is beautiful.
I love that I can choose premium yarns for amazing softness. Can't wait.
Grace says
I enjoy all that you do for the crochet and knitting community. Your free patterns and videos are the best!
Emma Reid says
I would love to join the crochet along. I tend to work on smaller projects as my attention does not hold for larger ones. I am determined to do this.
