Crochet Marled Modern Granny Afghan
Mikey challenged me to crochet a marled afghan, so I went straight to my favourite go-to pattern to create this super easy Marled Modern Granny Afghan. While holding 2 strands of the Caron Chunky Cakes together, this lovely piece went really fast. I used 8 Cakes to crochet this 52" square blanket.
Besides all of the beautiful colour changes, I want to add that this is a really, really heavy blanket. If you haven't heard the benefits of Weighted Blankets, be sure to pop over and read about it on my blog, 9 Crocheted Blankets of Love Ideas. This one should definitely be added to the list.
Any chunky #6 yarn can be substituted. Maybe even try mixed a solid colour, like Bernat Softee Chunky with a Caron Chunky Cake and see what happens.
Marled #MG Modern Granny Afghan

- Caron Chunky Cakes - Twist of Lime - 8 Balls
- Crochet Hook 10.0mm Size N/P
The entire afghan is crocheted holding 2 strands of the chunky yarn throughout the project to create the marled effect.
If you are familiar with any of my other #MG patterns, this one is basically the same. The only difference is that I only chained 2 in between the 3-dc groups instead of the normal ch 3. I felt with the doubled yarn, this tightened it up a bit and gave the project a neater overall appearance.
Round 1: Ch 4, in 4th ch from hook, 2 dc, ch 1, *3 dc, ch 1; rep * 2 more times, sl st to beg ch.
Round 2: Sl st in next 2 dc, [(sc, ch 3, sc) in ch-1 sp (corner made), ch 2] 4 times; join with sl st to first sc.
Round 3: (Sl st, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in first corner ch-3 sp, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp, [(3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in the next corner ch-3 sp, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp] 3 times; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Round 4: Sl st in next 2 dc, *(sc, ch 3, sc) in next corner ch-1 sp, ch 2, [sc in next sp between 3-dc groups, ch 2] to next corner ch-1 sp; rep from * 3 more times; join with sl st to first sc.
Round 5: (Sl st, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in first corner ch-3 sp, 3 dc in each ch-2 sp to the corner, *(3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next corner ch-3 sp, 3 dc in each sp to corner; rep from * 2 more times; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Rounds 6 thru 33: Rep round 4 and 5.
Round 34: Rep round 4.
Edging
Round 1: *5 sc in corner ch-3 sp, 3 sc in each ch-2 sp to corner; rep from * 3 more times; sl st to beg sc. Finish off.

Thank you so much for the idea with double yarn to create a heavy blanket. I've looked at weighted blankets but they're all expensive. This is a great idea.

I am making the Marled MG Granny Afghan. Love it! You recommended Caron’s Chunky Cakes Twist of Line. My colors s are so different to your picture. What yarn did you use for the pic in your pattern?
