The Crochet Rainy Day Waves Throw consists of traditional granny stitches in several rows, then switching to single crochet for several rows before going back to traditional granny stitches again.
I have provided additional information below for customizing the size of your blanket if you want to change the width. If you change the size, the pattern yarn required will change and I don't have that information for the yardage difference between the sizes.
This uses Red Heart Super Saver yarn. The variegates and solids play nicely together for this throw.
This blanket original chain count is 163 with the first row just being single crochet across. It's the second row where the stitch multiples reveal itself.
To change the size of this blanket, it's in multiples of 15 chains + 13. Look below if you don't understand what a stitch multiple is.
Each stitch multiple of 15 chains is just over 4" in width. For wave afghans, you will have a long chain and in this pattern, and long first row. It's not until the second row that the wave is formed and you will see the collapse of this into the wave format.
Example of Changes
A crocheter wrote, they are looking for a blanket that is 60" (5 feet) or 72" (6 feet) wide. The original blanket is only 45" wide.
- A three-foot-wide baby blanket is 148 chains.
- This pattern is 45" wide and is 163 chains.
- A four-foot-wide blanket will need 193 chains.
- A five-foot-wide blanket will need 238 chains.
- A six-foot-wide blanket will need 283 chains.
- A seven-foot-wide blanket will need 328 chains.
- An eight-foot-wide blanket will need 373 chains.
MAJOR TIP
This is no crochet diagram that goes with this pattern. Just know when you see skip the first three stitches in row 2, the first stitch is includes the stitch where the chain 2 comes out of.

Hi Mikey
I SOOO appreciate your making a diagram for the rainy day afghan BBUUUUUTTTT
Could you please add a row after the section of SC stitches to show how to change back to the granny cluster row section again ?
I tried to figure out from the starting row of chains but I want to make sure to make the bottom valley section correctly when I change back to granny.
Thanks for your consideration
María

Understood. Let me work on that. It's the same count as shown in row 2. I will work on your request. It's sunday... I'll try to get to it.

I see what you are saying. I think there's an error in the pattern. I'm glad I didn't record this.

Correction. I made an error in the diagram. Fixing Rows 8 to 13. I had an extra stitch in there on the ends. Updating shortly.

Updated. 🙂 Enjoy your sunday.

Thanks Mikey !!
I very very much appreciate you!!
I’m restarting my afghan now with your corrections—not a problem as I changed my mind about my yarn colors anyway & just had to wait for my new yarn order to arrive anyway. Always like a “reason” for yarn shopping right 😉😃
