A new version of the Crochet Hugs and Kisses Candy Hearts Blanket, designed by Jeanne Steinhilber is ready. A change in the approach to make the chevron blanket square off with easy add-ons at the end to fill in the chevrons to have flat edges all around.
This version was created to make it simpler to square off a point or make a square or rectangular shape. Multiple sizes have been figured out, but it's up to you to determine how much yarn you will use.
The pattern was figured out using 4.5 mm / US 7, 5 mm / US H/8 and 10 mm / US N/P crochet hooks.
Yarn
Caron® Baby Cakes™ Yarn 8.5 oz. / 240 g, 560 yds / 512 m
FYI: There used to be smaller balls of Caron Baby Cakes that were 100 g/3.5 oz, 211 m/ 231 yds. This new version uses a larger size.

A - Candy Hearts - 3 Balls
Red Heart Super Saver 7 oz / 198 g, 364 yds / 333 m
B - Soft White - 1 Ball
Gauge 14 sc and 15 rows = 4”
Hook 4.5 mm / US 7 Hook

Abbreviations List
- Ch(s) = Chain(s)
- Dc = Double crochet Dc3tog = Double crochet 3 together
- Hdc = Half double crochet
- Hdc2tog = Half double crochet 2 together
- Hdc3tog = Half double crochet 3 together
- Rep = Repeat
- Sc = Single crochet
- Sc2tog = Single crochet 2 together
- Sc3tog = Single crochet 3 together
- Sk = Skip
- St(s) = Stitch(es)
- WS = Wrong side
- Yoh = Yarn over hook
Special Stitches
- Bobble = Dc4tog in same st. In next st, *yoh, pull up a loop, yoh, pull through 2 loops; rep from * 3 times, until you have 5 loops on hook, yoh and pull through all to complete 4 dc together. These are worked on the wrong side.
- X-st = Sk next st, dc in next st, dc in skipped st behind the first dc.
Stitch Multiples = 28 + 2
- 4 ply Medium Weight Worsted Yarn with 4.5 mm / US 7 Hook. Each Chevron is 6.5” across for each multiple of 28 chains.
- 4 ply Medium Weight Worsted Yarn with 5 mm / H/8 Hook. Each Chevron is 7” across for each multiple of 28 chains.
- Bernat Blanket yarn with 10 mm / N/P Hook. Each chevron is 13” across for each multiple of 28 chains.
TIP
If you have trouble recognizing the “peaks” and “valleys” of the chevron, use stitch markers until you are comfortable. This is especially helpful on the half double crochet and bobble row. The hdc3tog tends to lean off to the side and can be hard to spot.
Instructions
Below are the starting chain counts for multiple sizes in medium #4 weight yarn and Bernat Blanket. Use the chain count to get the size you need. You decide the yarn quantity.
I used 4.5 mm / US 7 with Chain 170 on the baby blanket sample to ensure tighter stitches.

Crochet Diagram of Main Blanket
Squaring Off
Squaring this off requires 3 additional add ons to be applied directly to the blanket.
- Chevron A is used to fill in the full chevrons to make the edge flat.
- Chevron B is only used once to fill in the one corner as shown below in the illustration.
- Chevron C is also used only once in the opposite corner.
There are three add-ons, as we need to honour the blanket's right side (RS) so each fill-in looks the same.
Chevron A - Full Chevron Fill Ins
With RS Facing - 1st row: Join with sl st to 1st dc over from the middle dc of a point. Ch 1. Sctog. 1 sc in next 10 dc. Sc3tog over next 3 dc. 1 sc in next 10 dc. Sc2tog over last 2 dc. Turn.
2nd row: Ch 2. 1 dc in next sc (counts as dc2tog st). [X-st] 4 times. Dc3tog over next 3 sc. [X-st] 4 times. Dc2tog over last 2 sc. Turn.
3rd row: Ch 1. Sc3tog over first 3 dc. 1 sc in next 5 dc. Sc3tog over next 3 dc. 1 sc in next 5 dc. Sc3tog over last 3 dc. Turn.
4th row: Ch 2. Dc2tog over next 2 sc (counts as dc3tog). 1 dc in next 2 sc. Dc3tog over next 3 sc. 1 dc in next 2 sc. Dc3tog over last 3 sc. Turn.
5th row: Ch 1. Sc2tog over first 2 dc. Sc3tog over next 3 dc. Sc2tog over last 2 dc. Fasten off.
Chevron B - 1 Quarter Chevron Fill In
With RS Facing - 1st row: Join with sl st to 1st dc on the edge. Sc2tog over first 2 dc.

5th row: Ch 1. Sc2tog over first 2 dc. Sc2tog over last 2 dc. Fasten off.
Chevron C - 1 Quarter Chevron Fill in
With RS Facing - 1st row: Join with sl st to 1st dc over from the middle dc of a point. Ch 1. Sctog. 1 sc in next 10 dc. Sc2tog over next 2 dc. Turn.
2nd row: Ch 2. 1 dc in next sc (counts as dc2tog st). [X-st] 4 times. Dc2tog over last 2 sc. Turn.
3rd row: Ch 1. Sc3tog over first 3 dc. 1 sc in next 5 dc. Sc2tog over last 2 dc. Turn.

5th row: Ch 1. Sc2tog over first 2 dc. Sc2tog over last 2 dc. Fasten off.
Border
Once the chevron fill ins are done, the blanket can be square or rectangle. You can proceed to adding a border.
1st rnd: RS. With B, join with sl st to any corner. Ch 1, 1 sc in same corner. Evenly space sc across. *(1 sc. Ch 2. 1 sc) in last st to turn. Evenly space sc across. Rep from * around. 1 sc in beg st. Join with hdc to beg sc.
2nd rnd: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 1 dc in same corner sp. 1 dc in each st to next corner. *(2 dc. Ch 2. 2 dc) in corner sp. 1 dc in each st to next corner. Rep from * around. 2 dc in beg corner sp. Join with hdc to top of beg ch 3.
3rd rnd: Ch 3, 2 dc in same corner sp. 1 dc in each st to next corner. *5 dc in corner sp. 1 dc in each st to next corner. Rep from * around. 2 dc in beg corner sp. Join with sl st to top of beg ch 3. Fasten off.

If you prefer the original, the edges are handled differently, and they are not full chevrons.
