Crochet Cosmetic Bag Pattern

Cosmetic Bag: Inspired by Orange is the New Black TV Show

I started watching Season 3 of Orange is the New Black TV Show last night and I noticed one of the inmates had a crochet cosmetic bag sitting on the counter of the bathroom. Of course, the crocheter in me kicks and I have no idea what the actors were saying as my mind was staring at the bag and thinking, "What a fabulous idea!"

I got thinking about my travel cosmetic bag that has my items I need when I travel. I can design one of those. So I went ahead and designed one today.

The one in the show was using a variegated, what I believe to be a cotton yarn as I wouldn't use acrylic or any other fibers for this application. I didn't freeze the screen to get a good look at it. I just saw the concept and thought... YES... that would be cool to have when I travel.

Bag Details

• 6" Diameter
• 12" Tall
• Built in Handls
• 2 Balls of Lily Sugar'n Cream. The colour I used was Tangerine.

Free Pattern

Using 6 mm or size J crochet hook.

Base

1. Ch 4, Join with sl st to beginning ch to form ring.
2. Ch 3, 11 dc into ring. Sl st at end to top of beg ch-3. - 12 sts
3. Ch 3, 1 dc into same stitch as join, 2 dc into each st around. Sl st at end to top of beg ch-3. - 24 sts
4. Ch 3, 1 dc into same stitch as join, * 1 dc into next stitch, 2 dc into next. Repeat * around. Final stitch is 1 dc. Sl st at end to top of beg ch-3. - 36 sts
5. Ch 3, 1 dc into same stitch as join, * 1 dc into next 2 stitches, 2 dc into next. Repeat * around. Final 2 stitches are 1 dc into each. Sl st at end to top of beg ch-3. - 48 sts
6. Ch 3, 1 dc into same stitch as join, * 1 dc into next 3 stitches, 2 dc into next. Repeat * around. Final 3 stitches are 1 dc into each. Sl st at end to top of beg ch-3. - 60 sts

Side

1. Ch 2, Back Post Double Crochet into each around. St st at the end of the top of the beg ch-2 - 60 sts
2. Ch 3, (counts as hdc  + 1 ch), * skip 1 stitch, hdc into next, ch 1. Repeat * around. Join to the 2nd ch of the beg ch-3. - 60 sts
3. Sl st to next ch-1 gap. Ch 3, hdc into next gap, ch 1. Repeat * around. Join to the 2nd ch of the beg ch-3. - 60 sts
4. Repeat Step 3 - 12 times.
5. Sl st into next ch-1 gap. Ch 1, 2 sc into each gap around. Join to the beg sc. - 60 sts.
6. Ch 2, 1 hdc in each st around. Join to the top of the beginning ch 2. - 60 sts.

Handle

1. Ch 2, 1 hdc into the next 14 stitches, ch 15, skip 15 stitches, 1 hdc into next 15 sts, ch 15 and skip final 15 sts. Join to the beg HDC. - 60 sts.
2. Ch 2, 1 hdc into each sts, 15 hdc in each of the two ch-15 spaces. Join to the beg hdc - 60 sts.
3. Ch 2, 1 hdc into each st around. Join to the beg hdc. - 60 sts
4. Ch 2, 1 hdc into each st around. Join to the beg hdc. - 60 sts
5. Ch 1, reverse single crochet into each st around. Join to the beginning reverse single crochet.
6. Fasten off and weave in ends.

PS. Orange is the New Black does not endorse in any way my pattern. I just saw the concept and thought it was such a cool idea. If you have seen the show, you might want a bag for yourself. This is not the original pattern as seen in the show. It's just an inspired project based on the show.
