Crochet Reversible Cowl Pattern + Tutorial

The Crochet Reversible Cowl, designed by me, is a one-ball-quick plane trip type of project to complete. It uses Red Heart Gemstone yarn, which is marled on its own to create a unique-looking project.

There is a lot of yarn inside the Gemstone I made an adult hat to ensure I wasn't wasting any yarn. I was pretty excited about it.

    Materials List

    Red Heart Gemstone, 200 g/7 oz, 285 meters/312 yards

    MC - Peridot, 1 Ball

    Hook: 8mm / L

The infinity format of doing reverse single crochet gives a unique perspective to half of the cowl rib stitching on an angle while the other half looks like the granite stitch. It’s pretty neat how this stitch works up.

I had enough yarn left on the ball and did a matching-looking adult hat. Essentially, one ball = 2 projects.

    • Sk = Skip
    • Sl St = Slip Stitch

    Instructions

    Body

With mc, ch 90. Join with sl st to beg chain, careful not to twist chain.

1st rnd: Ch 1, sk next ch, *1 sc in next ch, ch 1, sk next ch. Rep from * around. Before proceeding. Organize the project as if it was a regular cowl without a twist. Now, flip the beg sc down so you will start crocheting on the bottom side of the sc. Join with sl st. Do not turn.

2nd rnd to the end: Sl st to next ch 1 sp. Ch 1, rsc in same sp. *Ch 1, rsc in next ch 1 sp. Continue * until the cowl is 7” wide.

Tips: You will notice it actually takes 2 revolutions of the cowl to get back to where you originally started. As you rotate the first time around, you will notice you will be on the underside of where you started. When you rotate the 2nd time, you will be back to where you started.

The project is growing outward from the original chain.

It feels awkward to start the reverse single crochet but you will get the hang of it and maybe even love it to apply it to other projects you may have.

To Finish: Once you are happy with the width, simply sl st to the next ch 1 sp and next reverse single crochet. Fasten off and weave in ends.

As a side note, I did this project on a short plane trip during my travels. It’s a quick portable project and the yarn is all marled up is really lovely to work with and, dare I say it, it’s addictive to watch how the colours work itself out.

Is the color way really Peridot? The skein displayed in Yarninspirations doesn't look the same as your tutorial.
