Michael Sellick and Jeanne Steinhilber present Inspired by Friendship Crochet Blanket—same pattern done in two different colour stories. There is a Blue / White Version and Colourful Melange Version.
--
They chatted on a recent vacation about designing a blanket together, much like the Better Together Afghan back in 2020. A passenger spared them some yarn to begin and finish a prototype on board using Caron One Pound yarn. A new design was born.
When they collaborate, they have the same tension in their hands. So Mikey started this with a 6 dc cluster corner-to-corner rectangle shape. Jeanne took over the blanket and did the textured shells and so on.
Upon getting home, neither was convinced about the original's colouring. Mikey was very unhappy with the obvious cut in colour in the centre corner to corner rectangle. The white was too dominant throughout.
New Approach
Jeanne switched the centre to Caron Cinnamon Swirl Cakes instead in a colour called Bay and started mixing it with Caron One Pound in white. The Caron Swirl Cakes transition naturally in colouring. I thought originally she did colour play. I was obsessed with how it looked.
It's estimated she will use 6 balls of Caron Cinnamon Swirl Cake in colour called Bay and 1 Ball of Caron One Pound in the colour of White.
Mikey went in a different direction by using Red Heart Roll With It Melange. Mikey has so far used 1 Ball of Greenroom, 1 Ball of Gossip and 3 Balls of Tabloid. He still has more to add, so the ball count isn't firm yet. The prototype of the new sample is still in the works.
Difference of Colourways
Jeanne is more strategic in the changing of colours. Mikey allows the same colour yarn to play its own tune on how it comes out.
We are working on this free pattern now. It will be out in the future, but we don't have an exact date yet. We are working as fast as we can.
Square Version
Do you prefer your blanket to be square? We have figured that out but you will need to guess your yarn amounts as you will need more yarn than suggested. Below is the 6 Double Crochet Cluster Corner to Corner in Square Format.
Complete the centre as a square by doing 22 blocks x 22 blocks and the pattern picking up on Rnd 1 will work for the entire blanket.
Pattern
We are currently writing this pattern and the yarn amounts are unknown fully. However, the instructions will be added in if you want to substitute.
5 mm / H/8 Hook - Jeanne's Version is 12 sc and 13 rows = 4" [10 cm]. Mikey's Version is 13 sc and 14 rows = 4" [10 cm].

Sl st = Slip stitch
Sp(s) = Space(es)
St(s) = Stitch(es)
Standing Sc = Form slip knot and insert onto the hook. Insert hook into st, yoh and pull loop through, yoh through 2 loops.
V-st = (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in selected stitch.
Yoh = Yarn over hook
TIPS
TIP: As you begin, row 1 is the WS (wrong side). Mark the RS (right side) for future reference.
The beginning rectangle block is just corner to corner with a modification of using the cluster stitch for the rich texture shown. The block is 10 blocks by 22 blocks.
The outside blocks are just regular flat corner-to-corner stitches.
The crochet diagram is available for the middle rectangle.
Special Stitches for C2C
Cl block = Cluster Block - (Sl st. Ch 3. 6 double crochet cluster. (Yoh, insert into assigned sp, yoh and pull through loop. Yoh and pull through 2 loops) 6 times. Yoh and pull through all 7 loops. Ch 1.) in next ch-3 sp.
Dec block start = Sl st in each of first 3 dc and next ch. (Ch 3, 3 dc) in beg ch sp.
Inc block = Beginning Block - Ch 6. 1 dc in 4th ch from hook. 1 dc in each of next 2 ch - beg block made.
Reg block = Regular Block - (Sl st. Ch 3. 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp.
With A, ch 6. This section is written as Corner to Corner in Rectangle Format. See note after 10th row for those wanting the square version instead.
1st row: (WS). 1 dc in 4th ch from hook. 1 dc in each of next 2 ch. Turn. 1 block made.
2nd row: (RS) Inc block. Reg block. Turn. 2 blocks.
TIP: Cluster blocks start here with the first and last block on the edges being regular blocks and everything in between is a cluster block.
3rd row: Inc block. Cl block. Reg block. Turn. 3 blocks.
4th row: Inc block. (Cl block) twice. Reg block. Turn. 4 blocks.
5th row: Inc block. (Cl block) three times. Reg block. Turn. 5 blocks.
6th row: Inc block. (Cl block) four times. Reg block. Turn. 6 blocks.

9th row: Inc block. (Cl block) seven times. Reg block. Turn. 9 blocks.
10th row: Inc block. (Cl block) eight times. Reg block. Turn. 10 blocks.
For square keep increasing until there are 22 blocks and then begin decreasing as written in 23rd row.
We will start to decrease one side and increase on the other to form a rectangle shape.
11th row: WS. Dec block. (Cl block) eight times. Reg block. Turn. 10 blocks.
12th row: RS. Inc block. (Cl block) eight times. Reg block. Turn. 10 blocks.
13th to 22nd rows: Rep 11th and 12th rows. 10 blocks.

TIPS
- Stitch counts will be short row x long row.
- Stitch counts don’t include chain spaces in corners.
- Ch 3 counts as dc here and throughout.
Going forward in the square version, ignore the stitch counts in the short side. Example is below of 10 ch-3 sps x 22 ch-3 sps. Ignore the 10 ch-3 sps as you won't have a short side. All stitch counts match the long side going forward for just the square.
The colouring sequence is different between Jeanne and Mikey's version. The pattern directly below is for Jeanne's Version. Mikey's version needs to be re-written and will be provided at a later time.
1st rnd: RS. With B, attach to any corner st. Ch 1, 1 sc in same st. *Ch 3. [1 sc in next sp between 2 blocks. Ch 3.] Rep [ ] to next corner. ** (1 sc. Ch 3. 1 sc) in corner stitch. Rep from * twice, then * to ** once. 1 sc in same beg corner st. Ch 3. Sl st to beg sc. Break B. 10 ch-3 sps x 22 ch-3 sps.
2nd rnd: With A. Attach to any corner st. Ch 3, 2 dc in same corner sp. 3 dc in each ch-3 sp to next corner. *(3 dc. Ch 1. 3 dc) in next corner sp. 3 dc in each ch-3 sp to next corner. Rep from * around. 3 dc in beg sp. Join with sc to top of beg ch-3. 36 dc x 72 dc.
Measures 9” X 18” as a rectangle format. Measures 18" x 18" with the 22 blocks by 22 blocks format in square format.

TIP: Avoid the mistake Mikey did for this next round and everytime you do a V-stitch round. The v-stitches go directly over the bobble that appears below. Mikey had one side where the v-stitches were off by one stitch and really noticeable. The v-stitches should be directly over top of each other and not off to the side as it shows in the first picture. If you are missing stitch that is causing the misalignment, don’t skip suggested stitches at the start of the side and fake it.
Notice the v-stitch is off to the left by one stitch. It’s really noticeable once you fill it in with the bobble.
The v-stitch should be directly over the bobble as shown here.
40th rnd: Ch 3, 1 dc in same sp, *1 dc in next st, sk next st, V-st in next st, [sk 2 sts, V-st in next st] until 2 sts rem, sk next st, 1 dc in last st,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp; rep from * twice, then from * to ** once, 2 dc in beg sp, hdc join to beg ch 3. Break A. Turn. 46 V-sts, 6 dc x 56 V-sts, 6 dc.
TIPS:
- Just a reminder, the first part of the instruction is the short side.
- The bobbles are aligned with the v-stitches. An easy way to crochet this is to recognize the v-stitches and know the bobble you are placing is one v-stitch prior to the bobble you see below. However, once you get to the centre point of side, the bobble will appear one v-stitch after the bobble below.
This shows the bobble going in 1 v-stitch before the bobble shown in the third row below. Before the centre point of a side.
This shows the bobble going in 1 v-stitch after the bobble shown in the third row below. After the centre point of a side.

Textured blankets look best after a bit of blocking. Careful with steam but you can also lightly spray the blanket with water and let air dry too.

I started working on the center section. For those looking for a little help, check out Mikey’s YouTube video tutorial on C2C. I used it to learn the concept a few years ago.
I love that this is a rectangle, and it has all the texture I’ve come to expect with Mikey and Jeanne’s patterns!

I love the patterns you two do together. I have been doing the CALs for about 5 years and always look forward to the next! Thank you both so much for sharing your creations and love of designing with all of us.

This is a stunning blanket! I’m laid up at the moment with back and shoulder issues, but as soon as I can get back at it this is first project! Thanks for such a lovely design.
