The QEII Cancer Centre in Halifax has sent an email asking for locals who have time to donate quilts, knitting, crochet or blankets for the Palliative Care patients within. Having spent time with Karen at this hospital just a few days ago, I saw care given to the cancer patients firsthand.
Firstly, they are not looking for financial donations or donations to be mailed in. They are looking for local people who can drop off their items at the hospital itself.
Note from QEII
Nova Scotians who quilt, knit or crochet, we need your help! The QEII Cancer Centre [Nova Scotia Cancer Care Program] is once again in need of handmade, lap-sized blankets. This time, we're also happily accepting full-size blankets for our Palliative Care patients.
The “lapghans” will be handed out by volunteers to the patients in the numerous Cancer Centre waiting rooms while they wait for treatment. A lap-sized blanket, or “lapghan,” is made to fit over a wheelchair or someone in a sitting position. Sizes typically range from 32” to 48” (81-122 cm) wide by 35” to 40” (89-102 cm) in length. Full-sized blankets will be used for Palliative Care patients.
If you would like to quilt, knit or crochet a lapghan or blanket for our Cancer Centre and Palliative Care patients, please bring your donations to our Volunteer Coordinator of Cancer Care and Palliative Care, Erin Fair, in Volunteer Services, Room 24, Main floor of the Centennial Building, any time from Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. If you can only deliver after these hours, donations can be left outside the office door and will be collected the following business day.
Thank you to the quilting, knitting and crochet community for your support!
We have many free patterns for lapghans, but be mindful that you may need to change a stitch multiple to make it work for those in wheelchairs.

All blankets and lapghans Mikey makes for design and tutorials are gladly donated to the local Kings County Family Resource Centre and Annapolis Valley Health. Mikey doesn't feel right about being gifted yarn to teach with by Yarnspirations.com and not pushing it forward to another person in need through donation services. The need is too great to ignore.
Please do not make plans to mail The Crochet Crowd any finished blankets. Be sure to drop off your donations directly at QEII.
Those local to Michael in the Annapolis Valley can visit us on Wednesdays at Michaels in New Minas from 6 pm to 8:30 pm. Many of our stitchers are involved in one or more charities. They can give you the scoop and tell you where you can best make a difference.
