The Crochet Diagonal Spikes Square Blanket can be made to any size and repeats two rounds until you are done. First seen on the Study of Ombre Stitch Along.
I wondered what this would look like if the entire blanket were the diagonal spike stitch. You can see it's in the 4th week we do that in the pink.
The trick was to figure out how to start this blanket from the very beginning and let the stitch play itself out.

Yarn and Hook Details
You can pick any yarn and hook size that matches that yarn. The sample shown is using 5 mm / H/8 with Caron Simply Soft in Off White. I leave it to you to figure out how much yarn you will need. You can finish this blanket in any size as it will stay flat.
Abbreviations
- Beg = Beginning
- Ch = Chain
- Dc = Double Crochet
- Rep = Repeat
- Rnd(s) = Round(s)
- RS = Right Side
- Sc = Single Crochet
- Sl st = Slip Stitch
- St(s) = Stitch(es)
- Tr = Treble Crochet
Note: Join using a half double crochet to the top of the first ch-3 or single crochet.
Ch 4. Join with sl st to form a ring.
1st rnd: RS. Ch 3 (counts as a dc here and throughout), 3 dc in the ring. * Ch 2, 4 dc in the ring. Rep from * twice more. Join. 4 dc per side.
2nd rnd: Ch 1, 1 sc in same beg corner. 1 sc in each st to next ch-2 sp. *(1 sc. Ch 2. 1 sc) in next ch-2 sp, 1 sc in each st to next ch-2 sp. Rep from * twice more. 1 sc in beg ch-2 sp. Join. 6 sc per side.
I feel the stitch count is irrelevant as the stitch combo is in sets of 3 sts on the 3rd rnd each time it's completed.
3rd rnd: Ch 3. 1 dc in the beg ch-2 sp. (Skip next st. 1 dc in each of next 2 sts. 1 tr in skipped stitch, working over last 2 dc just made - diagonal spike st) across to next corner ch-2 sp. *(2 dc. Ch 2. 2 dc) in next corner ch-2 sp. (Skip next st. 1 dc in each of next 2 sts. 1 tr in skipped stitch, working over last 2 dc just made - diagonal spike st) across to next corner ch-2 sp. Rep from * Twice. 2 dc in beg ch-2 sp. Join. 2 diagonal spike st combos and 4 dc sts per side.
4th rnd: Ch 1, 1 sc in same beg corner. 1 sc in each st to next ch-2 sp. *(1 sc. Ch 2. 1 sc) in next ch-2 sp, 1 sc in each st to next ch-2 sp. Rep from * twice more. 1 sc in beg ch-2 sp. Join. 12 sc per side.
Rep 3rd and 4th rnds until you are satisfied with the size of the blanket.
Diagonal Spikes Stitch in Rows
You can pick any yarn and hook size that matches that yarn. The sample shown is using 5 mm / H/8 with Caron Big Donut in Mint Julep. I leave it to you to figure out how much yarn you will need. You can finish this blanket in any size as it will stay flat.
I am currently making a sample. I won't have your chain counts for size, but you can chain in multiples and measure it against something you want to match to.

- Rep = Repeat
- Rnd(s) = Round(s)
- RS = Right Side
- Sc = Single Crochet

Chain using the stitch multiple of 3, then add 3 chains at the end.
1st row: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each ch across. Turn.
2nd row: RS. Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout) (Skip next st. 1 dc in each of next 2 sts. 1 tr in skipped stitch, working over last 2 dc just made - diagonal spike st) across to 2nd last st. 1 dc in last st. Turn.
3rd row: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across. Turn.
Rep 2nd and 3rd rows until you are satisfied with the size of the blanket. Fasten off at the end.
