Simple Dog Sweater Project

We have received 1000’s of requests for dog sweaters and coats. Thousands of crocheters are asking for pet sweaters. Truth is, you could use this same sweater for a cat but good luck getting your cat into it. I know our cats would rip our eyes out if we tried. I would have liked to get our cats posing in my sweater but I think my life isn’t worth it.

In the fairness of creativity, I didn’t design this dog coat. Eleanor Miles-Bradley designed this dog coat for Red Heart Yarns. In keeping with requests, I decided to keep all stitches like single crochet to keep my tutorial basic to help newbie crocheters. I haven’t changed any stitch counts or sizing. I have also not changed any colours within my tutorial. You can change the colours if you prefer.

Ultimately, if you like to change colour or even get this fabulous design, you can simply follow the written instructions to achieve it. As an experienced crocheter, I really like the changes of colour and the Long Single Crochet Stitch that she is asking for.

A tip for you. If you are following the pattern for what the designer is asking for. Each colour is used for two rows before changing. When planning out this sweater, as long as you keep this in mind, your colours will work out perfectly.

Get the free design, Dog Sweater Crochet Pattern to follow along with my video tutorial. It is my guess, once you follow this design through, your mind will be spinning on other ideas and colour options for dog coats. When following along, be sure to pay attention that there is a small, medium and large size indicated in the pattern.

  1. I have never crocheted before, but am wanting to make a dog sweater that buttons for ease of putting on and taking off. I simple/single crochet stitch would be fine I think, but am having a problem finding a pattern and how to video on this. Is there anything available anywhere? I live in the Midwest and the temperatures are getting colder and colder. If possible, could you please email information to [email protected]? Thank you in advance for your help! I need to get started on this asap!

  2. cute sweater. I couldn’t make out what kind of yarn you used with the reflective property. Could you tell me what it was? I’d love to make one for my little black dog to make her more visible at night. Thanks in advance.

  3. I had so much fun making this dog sweater for our Yorkie poo. Bouli! I enjoyed the fact that I had the instructions in front of me while following along with Mikey’s tutorial. The combination of the two made this project doable and so enjoyable, as I’m a beginner and would not have been able to tackle this kind of project without the extra support provided. By the way, Bouli loves his sweater, and would wear it all summer if I wouldn’t hide it from him until fall!

  4. This was great. The small fits my long hair chihuahua which is 3 1/2 mths old. I had so much fun making this and it fits her great. Bella will be able to wear this next winter.

  5. Thank you for the great tutorial! I made the small and it fit my Chihuahua perfectly. Now I have requests from family for 2 more in different sizes. However one is for a dog smaller than my Chihuahua so time to play with stitch count to downsize. Thanks again for the great tutorials. Keep hooking

  6. I’ve learned to crochet thanks to your videos. I never thought I could do this. You have enriched many lives. Thank you. Thank you

  7. I just finished making the dog sweater . Your video was so easy to follow. Thanks for sharing it. I will be looking for more videos from you.

  8. I have been looking all over for a sweater for my dog. All of the ones I found had slits down the side for the arms and I wanted a little sleeve since when she’s cold she snuggles and slips out of the sweater. Thank you so much for showing me how to make one!!!!!

  9. I just wanted to thank you for sharing your passion and helping me along the way. I love what you do and how supportive you have been.

I have been trying to encourage crochet the some younger children at a Primary school as a volunteer & finding it a bit too technical for them with my instruction. (reception to year 2) have you any tips in helping me keep Crochet interesting for them? A Teacher brought in Loom bands which are fun. blew the wind out of me if I’m honest. (tho I was guilty of joining the craze.)
