Matching yarns together for gauge substitution from the manufacturer's suggested gauge can be tricky. The manufacturer's suggestion is based on the science of having perfect conditions, but your hand(s) may never match what the yarn brand will require of you.
We have put together for Red Heart, Bernat and Lily Sugar'n Cream.
What may be true, though, is that if you are a specific gauge on one brand, you will be the same gauge on another if the suggestion is exactly the same on the yarn ball.
The patterns themselves may not match the recommended on the ball band because each designer has their tension. The information provided on the pattern will be exactly what the designer did. In the video above, it talks about changing hook sizes to get the correct gauge.
For myself, I keep an open document of my personal gauge swatches for different brands. I do this so I have this information to avoid doing gauge checks in the future if I am using a certain brand. What is definitely a factor, though, are my mood swings.
