Crochet Cake Envy Cardi

Hook up my Cake Envy Cardi and watch everyone around you turn green with, well, envy, because they will want one too!  This cardigan is similar to my Modern Granny Cardigan except this one uses regular Caron Cakes.  It can also be made using the Caron Big Cakes.   I added buttons on this one, but you can omit them if you choose.

After my Modern Granny Cardigan pattern (using Caron Sprinkle Cakes) was released, I had several requests for it to be written for regular cakes, so here it is.  While I find Cake Envy not as warm as Modern Granny, I tend to wear this one more often.  I think Cake Envy is a more versatile cardigan, as I will wear it in the spring and fall as well as the winter.  With so many colour choices of Caron Cakes, you may need to make more than one!

I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!  Until you see me next time here on The Crochet Crowd, you can find me on Ravelry as The Crochet Ninja.

This is my first time making a sweater but I am wondering if there is an error in the pattern at Front Left.. # 12 it reads Ch 3, [3 dc in next ch 3 sp] 5 times, 3 dc in last ch 3 sp , turn... Should there not be a chain 1 after each of the sets of 3 dc, seeing that in the next row it calls for doing a sc in the ch1 space.

Yes, you are correct. The pattern for Front Left #12 should read: Ch 3, [3dc in next ch 3 sp, ch 1] 5 times, 3 dc in last ch 3 sp, turn. My apologies for any inconvenience or confusion. I have updated the pattern so it is correct.

This is the first time I have used one of your patterns but I see you use turning chains a lot and while I have been crocheting for a long time and have used many patterns I don't remember seeing this before. So for example on this pattern for the end of the second row you say to sc in the top of the turning chain, then you have sc in the 5th ch of the turning chain now I will probably feel silly when you answer but I am totally confused

I'll ask Donna to review your concern.

Hi Lesley, I do use my turning chains a lot, and my reason is simply for looks. I find crocheting on top of a turning chain leaves a bit of a gap, where if you crochet in one of the chains of the turning chain, there isn't as much of a gap. I find it looks better and is more consistent with how the start of the row looks. With the start and end of the row looking symmetrical, you can't tell the start of the rows with the end of the rows in your finished product. To me this looks more "finished".

Now, for your specific question around row 2. I have you placing a sc on top of the turning chain, and in the 5th ch of the turning chain. This keeps the sides straight and the stitches consistent with the start of the row. The sc on top of the turning chain at the end of row 2 is the same as your first sc in the chain 1 space at the beginning of row 2. The sc in the 5th ch of the turning chain at the end of row 2 is the same as your first sc in the first dc at the beginning of row 2.

Sc on top of turning chain (end) = sc in ch 1 sp (beginning)
Sc in specific stitch of turning chain (end) = sc in first dc (beginning)

This way each side of the row is a mirror image of the other side and, in my opinion, looks more polished and finished. I hope I have cleared up the confusion 🙂
