Daniel and I have nearly 6.5 acres at our home, and it is far back from the highway to give ultimate privacy. During the warm months, you cannot see the neighbors through the trees.
We've always had cats, usually two at a time, so they can keep each other company. In the time we have been together, we have lost Clara, Dimitri, and Riverstone. Each has their own ending, and each was a rescue.
In This Project
The Dawgs
Currently, we have two Great Pyrenees mix dogs. Each was a farm dog from a litter and raised by us as a puppy to date.
PuppiDawg is the oldest dog, currently 6 years old, and is mellow as can be. We call her the grounds manager. She keeps the other one in check, and us for that matter too. She is approximately 130 lbs of fluff, and boy does she ever shed. She has a medical condition requiring monthly veterinary care.
Salti is our young dog, currently 4 years old. He's a ham and is more hyperactive. He is a 'daddy's boy', especially for Daniel. Being male, he regularly does what PuppiDawg tells him to do. He has a jealous side of him, and when sitting with him, he needs to have some part of his body touch you.
Daily Food - Both dogs are on a raw food regimen to keep them alert and healthy. Each day they are served.
- 2 cups of Acana Wild Coast Kibble.
- 8 oz of Raw Butcher's Select of either chicken, turkey or beef.
- 1 Chicken Egg or 1 duck egg or 2 Quail Eggs
- 1 Generous Sprinkle of Sam & Paisley Boost Powder
- Raw Food Treats during the day such as esophagus, chicken or turkey necks, chicken or turkey feet, liver, spleen, chicken heads, pig ears. Prepared and provided locally to us by Five Paws Barkery.
The Cats
Both cats are rescues and were rescued at the same time. Binky Boo is the older cat of the two. Puss Puss is kicking around here somewhere, too.
Both cats were used to being outside and craved going outside once we rescued them.
Binky Boo tends to sit with me in the evenings as I crochet. However, according to Puss Puss, she's not allowed in my bedroom at night. That's her domain.
Puss Puss rules my bedroom; I'm there most of the time. She spends a great deal of time outside. She's known for bringing mice, moles, birds, and chipmunks back into the house as a special treat for us here.
I have an ongoing joke: I am trying to get rid of the cats. I have a hard time reading their body language, and I am definitely their servant.
The Rest of the Fake Farm
We have an assortment of fowl, including chickens of the breeds Bantams, Lavender Marans, Jubilee Orpingtons, and Lemon Pyle Brahmas. Eggs are used for cooking and dog food. Mature birds are dispatched and become dinner for us or dog food.
Quail is a nutrient-rich ingredient for dog food. The eggs do not have salmonella that can harm the dogs.
Harlequin Ducks are here for the eggs.
Turkeys are bred for meals for both Daniel and me, and for dog food.
We are following the inspiration of Little Big Farm. Each creature, including us, has a purpose and plays a role in ecological balance. If something is overtaking the grounds, there's usually a natural solution, and it's a matter of trial and error.
No Plans
We have no plans to get goats, sheep, or 4-legged livestock. While it's joked about online, it's not a reality for us.
