Crochet Stepping Texture Hat Pattern + Tutorial

Sharing is caring!

Crochet this incredible and easy-to-follow Stepping Texture Hat pattern. It doesn't take much to see the stepping texture, causing a spiral feature to appear on the hat. It reminds me of cabling to some degree.

The hat is in three sections. You have the brim, main body and then pom-pom. My video tutorial will cover all three aspects of the hats.

Firstly, you will crochet your brim. You can follow the dimensions in the pattern but you can alter it as I give you a tip on what you need to do to ensure the stepping texture pattern will appear perfect. I cover that in the video tutorial.

Bernat Softee Chunky Yarn

This hat uses Bernat Softee Chunky Yarn. You will only need a couple of balls for the adult-size version. You will also need an 8 mm or Size L Crochet Hook to complete this project.

Have fun with this pattern. If you complete it, we would love to see your WIPs and finished projects posted on our Facebook Page.

    Hi Mikey,
You are an amazing artist and crafter. I love this hat, BUT when I saw it on a model, side view, I found it too tall for my taste. How hard would it be to eliminate some of the middle rows to make it shorter?
I would really appreciate hearing from you about this. Lilly

I made it with a size 5 yarn and a J hook instead!

Good afternoon, Mikey. Love this hat and ran right out to pick up some yarn and and L HOOK, which I didn't have. (Every size BUT..) As a seasoned (peppery) crocheter, I figured after watching the tutorial AND reading the pattern that this would be a quick fun project. One DUMB question. When working on the brim, the written pattern DOES NOT call for a chain one after turning for the next row, but in the video YOU DO. So? Normally, one would do a single chain after turning so? I've done it both ways but my gut says something ain't right. Please clarify, please?

I started that hat last night too and noticed that. I thought it looked better by adding the chain 1 so that's how I did mine.

I am so glad you made this video. I kept trying and trying to get this thing started and I could NOT get it right. Your videos not only save my from my frustration, you keep me going so I don't give up and quit. Thanks SO much!
