A crocheter is getting involved in teaching others to crochet and was looking at the newest hat in white with the big pom pom but was wondering if there was another version done that wasn't chunky yarn but in the medium 4-ply weight yarn. She wants to inspire others to crochet but works with a minimal budget.
I didn't know the answer to this so I joined Yarnspirations Customer Service in on the email if they have ever seen a hat like the construction of the first one and they located the second one in the medium weight yarn.
Val, in customer service, came through with flying colours. I will provide both versions below.
Hat 1 - Chunky Version
This hat is using Bernat Softee Chunky yarn. The PDF is designed specifically for beginners with very easy to follow detailed instructions that include illustrations and photography to show you what to do. This is the Pom on Top Crochet Adult Hat pattern.

Generally speaking, the two sizes referenced in this hat are small and large. Small being for typical adult female head sizes and the large being for typical male sizes.
There is actually another pattern for the entire family of sizing in this same yarn. There is tutorials for that version as well.
Hat 2 - Medium Weight Hat
Like the chunky version, this is also made into a flat hat that is sewn on the backside. It's just a repeat of 2 rows until you hit the designed size. This is only available in the one size for average adult. This was using Caron Simply Soft Marled yarn. I would substitute with regular Caron Simply Soft yarn as this other yarn was discontinued.
This is the Caron Simple Ribbed Crochet Beanie Hat pattern.

There's another hat that isn't similar but a great hat to learn called the Easy Street Hat. See below.
You could also try a Tunisian Ribbed Hat too. These are not yarn to make and a great introductory to Tunisian as well.
