Kenny and Sarah present the Annual Picnic Pop-Up Market in Hall's Harbour, Nova Scotia, on August 25th from 11 am to 3 pm. They are Two Birds One Stone Farm.
I will be a vendor/exhibitor at this event to raise awareness about things you can do in the valley. For those unfamiliar, the valley is a region of Nova Scotia that spans across ¼ of Nova Scotia that aligns with the Bay of Fundy. Daniel and I live on the valley ridge, and the valley behind us is Gaspereau Valley. Annapolis Valley is the home of a slew of wineries, breweries and agriculture that feeds and entertains people.
Kenny and Sarah live overlooking the Bay of Fundy. It's a beautiful and peaceful place.
We met Sarah and Kenny in 2018 at the Farmer's Market. Like us, they had moved from Ontario. They started a new life in Nova Scotia and have blended into the community. They started a flower farm.
They open up their property once a year for a pop-up picnic. You can bring a picnic. There are over 20 vendors this year. Smell the salty air from the Bay of Fundy. Their dog is named Meadow. Meadow was a baby last year. You are welcome to bring your dogs and keep them on a leash.
Shop the vendors.
Daniel and Karen will be with me as well. I might ask a few stitchers to come in and stitch with us to talk about yarn and the joy of creating.
My Goals Are Simple
- Let people know about two groups in the Valley, and it's free to attend.
- To bring like-minded creators together.
- Socialize and share tips about the craft itself.
The Crochet Crowd
My goal at the event is to raise awareness about creativity from my perspective. I run the Stitchers in The Valley, which meets Wednesdays from 6 pm to 8:30 pm at Michaels in New Minas, Nova Scotia. Our private group on Facebook is only for attendees to keep the group to local people for notice.
It's a stitcher's hangout for adults only. The humour can be adult at times, if not downright childish; I may be the cause of that, haha, and definitely, the only thing that gets finished is the desserts. Knit, needlepoint, diamond art, crochet and whatever is creative.
There are two dinner groups for Stitch Night.
- One group meets before Stitch Night at a select restaurant that is decided and changed weekly.
- The other group meets after stitch night in a local pub for pub fare and socializing. However, because I work all day, I struggle to meet the group before stitch night as my work day isn't over yet. We usually meet at either Joe's Food Emporium or The Church Brewery.
Freedom Miniatures
My second passion is miniatures. I started gathering supplies a year ago and finally buckled in to learn and create unique miniatures. Freedom Miniatures is located in downtown Kentville, Nova Scotia.
Shelley Acker, owner and my mentor. I'm not a dollhouse type of person, but I love creating vignettes of storytelling miniatures. It brings me a lot of joy.
Jennifer Williams runs Miniaturist of The Valley and gladly hosted at the Freedom Miniatures studio, graciously donated space by Shelley.
We have only about 4 to 5 people who show up, and we are looking to see who else is in the area that makes love this addictive little hobby. This is not a place to drop your kids off to create miniatures. It's an adult-based group that creates from things. You bring in your miniature(s) to work on for 6 hours. It happens on the first Sunday of each month from 10 am to 4 pm. You can also shop in the 'closed store' during the miniature day. Get the supplies you need.
Shelley and others offer advice if you are looking for it to execution of how to attack mini problems.
When I am joking online about going to Shelley's place, I say I am going to the Mini Mall. The major advantage of Freedom Miniatures is the scaling factor. Miniatures are usually 1:12 scale or 1:24 scale. I do the 1:12 scale. While Michaels has some miniatures, they don't honour this scaling and make it difficult to sometimes intermix things. So, I always check Shelley's website or reach out to her.
Shelley and I are going through Christmas Theming to create a North Pole Miniature. We are going through her online store, and we are putting things together.
Both Groups Allow Visitors
If you are passing through Nova Scotia and want to create with us, both groups are open to that. Stitcher's in The Valley has had people from Canada, the USA, and Europe pass through and sit with us.
Miniaturists in The Valley have had a visitor from the UK come in to hang with us to do miniature polymer creations. She was making pumpkins for fall.
If you will come in, bring your activity with you to be part of the fun.
