Crochet Flora Afghan
The Crochet Flora Afghan was inspired by a dishcloth that morphed into creating a set of 7 distinct crochet squares. The concept was to use to appease the crocheters in selecting squares they most loved. If a crocheter didn’t love a square, they could leave it out and fill it in with another square.
Over a weekend in November 2018, while watching gardening shows, I was inspired by the fountains and flowers. It became the theme. The final afghan is 62″ x 76″ with using 20 squares. One square, you only need to do two of them.

Inspired by the Lilies in August Square, I crocheted one entire afghan just what that square along. I did this while cruising with a bunch of my friends on a cruise ship. This particular pattern is also available on its own as it uses a different colour scheme but was constructed the same as the Lilies in August in the Flora Afghan.

Final Border
In watching crochet along of our past, there’s a common thread of conversation in crocheters wanting more of a challenge. This concept started with a crocheter emailing me to have one of these shapes converted to a square. You can see it here on the right-hand side, middle square. There’s a duplicate of the square on the upper left, 2nd one in.

One thing led to another and Daniel challenged me to retry it a second time but giving it more texture. Once I had completed it, Daniel suggested I do another one that matches the size. This is what led to the full creation of this concept. Over 2 days while being inspired by Don Monty’s Garden Shows on Netflix.
To complete the full afghan that is 4 x 5 squares. This afghan is a sampler where I have mixed up the squares so they are sitting randomly. Many people prefer more symmetry.
Video Introduction

Back Story
After completing all of the designs. I was scheduled for a personal vacation. So I decided to take the Lilies in August Square with me. I did up one square sample to test my pattern and weigh the yarn so I knew how much to take with me.
With a goal to make an additional 19. I started to crochet at the airport. Between connecting flights and more, I was able to get comfortably started.

While on my 10-day vacation, during the quiet times. I took my project with me. Whether I was sitting on a beach, deck chair or even lounge. Other passengers on holidays were taking mental notes and began to realize I was making something big.
I found passengers asking me about my project and as the days progressed, they were seeing how fast I was doing my project. I don’t claim to be a fast crocheter. I do claim to be determined.
By 2nd last day, I laid my afghan on the carpet to get a bird’s eye view of it. I whip stitched the afghan together and took it home.

If you really like the Lilies in August blanket on its own. I know the ball colours and counts for Caron One Pound. They are as follows:
- A – Dark Pink – 2 Balls
- B – Soft Pink – 1 Ball
- C – Ocean Blue – 1 Ball
- D – Country Rose – 2 Balls
- E – Midnight Blue – 2 Balls
- F – Grass Green – 2 Balls
This square will be released in August if you couldn’t tell by the name. The pattern is written based on 3 colours. If you see the picture below, you can see how I put the colours together.
Colours Used in Blue / White Sample
- 2 Balls Caron One Pound White
- 2 Balls Caron One Pound Ocean
- 2 Balls Caron One Pound Soft Gray Mix
The pattern is written where I have changed the colour in areas that made sense. You will see the conversion sheets to tell you how much yarn I used for each colour change in every square. This means you see my colourful example, that is using 5 colours, you can do the same thing or even use more colours. I gave you the yardages to be able to strategically plan your project.
I’m not able to find the conversion sheets for yardages. (I’m almost certain I’m overlooking something) I have checked the PDF and didn’t see it there or on this page. Would you mind pointing me in the right direction? Thank you!!
I pulled it offline thinking no one would want them after the pattern was out. They still exist. Here’s a link. https://thecrochetcrowd.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Flora-Afghan-TEchnical-Details.pdf

You wrote.” The Book with the final Show’n Tell Pictures from the global crocheters won’t be done until late November 2019. Plan on 35 MB of space for this book at this time.” It’s December 1.
Do you have an ETA on it?
Thanks,
chris
I’m trying to get Daniel to have time. He’s currently trying to get the next Crochet Cruise book written up. Just endless To Do List.
Anyone know how many squares are required for a king size with drape?
It depends a lot on your gage, but if yours is approximately the same size as the pattern, one square is about 14″x14″ and a king size is about 110″x100″ the pattern is for a 62×76 which consists of 4 squares crossed by 5 down. my suggestion is texted it 3-4 both directions. If you find that isn’t big enough add a row to whichever side you need increased. Hope that helps.
Where can we view the pictures people have submitted for this CAL? I know there are some pictures on the Crochet Crowd Stitch Social FB page, but they end up scattered all over the place. Do you have one location with all the finished projects pictures that folks have submitted and if so, where do I find it? Thanks. Loved the patterns. Hydrangea, water fountain, Queen Anne Lace, and flower clock were my personal favorites.
I’ve been searching and searching……where is the gallery for the finished Flora Afghans! Either I’m reading wrong or opening the incorrect link, I just don’t see anyone’s (or mine) works.
The finished examples of the full size is available at https://www.flickr.com/photos/mikeyssmail/albums/72157711188992243
I HAVE JUST FINISHED MY SQUARES FOR THE FLORA BLANKLET NOW I AM TRYING TO THINK HOW TO WIP STITCH THEM TOGETHER. CAN YOU SHOW ME PLEASE. THANK YOU NINA
Here’s a video on Whip Stitching. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSafP7s7DIs
How do I find the worksheet as shown on utube April 18 regarding making a square from a crochet round. I went to the link but am unable to find it
I’m not sure what you mean.
How do you undo a crochet item
I’m not sure I understand.
The latest tutorial, Water Fountain, is wonderful. I just have one question: why is Round 5 (where the trfp end up) and Round 7 where the modified TRfp go, different in the written pattern than in the Tutorial. The Modified TRfp’s appear, in the picture on the pattern, to be on either side of rnd 5’s trfp but in the tutorial the modified TRfp’s are connected to rnd 5’s trfp…. Just wondering. It looks fabulous either way, Thank You
Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I hadn’t realized I connected wrong. I have since changed the PDF to match your observations.
I love making these squares and want to complete it next month, but was wondering where the tutorial is for the Water Fountain. I know how to read the patterns, but watching you just makes it so much nicer.
where is the september 15 square it is now the 18 and I can’t find it
When is Septembers flower pattern coming out?
I love this pattern!
I was just wondering when the next lesson will drop since September 15 has come and gone with no new square. In eager to see what is next.
This is such a beautiful pattern!
Oh Noooooo. Are you ok Mikey? It is sept 17th and the block has not been released. Everything ok? I am so excited to complete this project. Just wondering! Thanks and hope you are ok!!!
OK, now it is the 17th of September. Where is the square that was supposed to be out September 15th?
Where is Sept pattern?? August was released early so I’ve been done with that for awhile and ready to finish afghan but need Sept and Oct patterns…please post!
When will September’s square be available?
Hi Mikey…when can we expect the square 6 for September?
It’a September 16, where is the next square?
Mikey! Where’s September’s flower?
Where is September’s square for the Flora Afghan. I’m ready to start and no pattern. Love it so far.
Loving this CAL – I am not finding September – is it my browser or am i looking in the wrong places – I checked here and FB –
Hi, Claudia here from Tennessee. As a seasoned doily maker of the Irish Rose, I know of a way to tack / pin those petals down so they remain like happy free standing flower petals!
After you do your petal and as you single crochet into the chain space, grab two strands of the back side of the petal in the previous row into your single crochet.
Your petal cannot fall thru and you still have a very happy free standing petal!
Looking forward to the next square! Claudia
Hi. Absolutely loving this CAL. I’m doing the extra squares to make a queen size Afghan. I was wondering if you will have recommendations for joining them together.
Thanks!
Oh my goodness!!! I just came across this today, and it is one of the most beautiful patterns/blankets I have ever seen. I am so excited to try this – I purchased my yarn. I am only a beginner, so I don’t know if I will be able to do it, but this would be my Mount Everest!!!! Thank you for sharing your incredible talents.
Any chance of an early release of the next square? I’m doing the Planet Earth and they will both be out on a July 15. Yikes.
Is it July 15th yet? Excited for the next square 🙂 My squares have turned out fabulous!!!!
I love the CAL you do; they have really helped me become a crocheter. Starting this new project a little late and maybe it’s too advanced for me. I watched your video and thought I was doing great. Then I double checked my square with the pattern. At row 7 my stitch count was way off. I pulled my square apart down to row 4 and can’t find my mistake. Then I realized your stitch count at the end of each row doesn’t make sense to me. For example, Row 2 ends with 24 STS, in Row 3 we add 5 stitches in the gap space between 12 stitches. So we have 5 stitches added 12 times or 60 stitches total. The pattern says 48. I think I may have just ripped out my square unnecessarily trying to find a mistake I don’t think I made. I looked through the comments but didn’t see anyone commenting on stitch count. Did I miss something?
Which square are you referring to? I haven’t heard anyone complain about that.
I was referring to the Chrysanthemum pattern instructions in e-book.
which version number is under the title of the Chrysanthemum title. version 4 is the latest and there have been no further corrections from that point from consumers.
I thought I was making a mistake also, then I realized that the chain two in the corners doesn’t count as a stitch. I started to make that mistake with the spring garden crochet along. I have read crochet instruction books which count the chain two as a stitch and others that tell you it doesn’t count as a stitch. Don’t know if this is your problem, just a thought.
Help….once again, I can’t get the photo to print on the posy pattern. Help!
M. Rose
It is a browser issue on your system. If you download the pattern and open it with ADOBE Acrobat, you can print it from there. It’s a global issue with some people, including me, where I cannot print a pdf using preview as the pictures go missing.
I feel like I’ve missed something….I can’t find the September 15th release for the new square! Is it me or has there been a delay?
Hello! Does the border on the Flora Afghan have to be with the whip and popcorn stitch or can you create your own border for the contest. Thank you!!
You can customize if you wish. I’m okay with that.
I have completed row 9 on my first square and want to continue on with the same color for round 10. Is there a way to continue without fastening off? I hate working ends in.
I was just wondering that if I made my Afghan more than 4×5 squares would it still qualify for an entry or do I have to do 4×5. Thank you for doing this and appreciate all the time you have put into this.
Mikey indicated you can make more and enter it but not less.
Well, I’ll be damned! for some reason, I started round 8 and did dcbp’s in all the appropriate spots except I just continued around without crocheting down towards the centre and back up again! I did the up and down on the following round AND dcbp as well. In effect, I’ve created another row but have continued on to the end of the square. So now my dilemma – I can leave the ‘extra’ round in and make the same ‘mistake’ on the next 2 squares or I can frog the first square back to Rnd 8 and take this as a lesson about paying attention. I have a feeling I’ll be going with option 2 🙂 (as previously posted on YouTube) UPDATE: I now realize that I’ve reversed Rnds 8 and 9 and not created an extra row. This may work! Talk about dumb luck!
WOW!! So much information Mikey! You went above and beyond on this project! I just want you to know how AMAZING you are and what a wonderful job you do. Your love of crochet really shines through in your work and how much you give of yourself! Keep it up! Strength may be hard to find at times but be sure and know that it is always there!
Thanks Mikey! Awesome Christmas tree skirt tutorial!! Great job! By any chance do u have any patterns for Christmas tree skirts with chunky yarn?
Thank you!
I don’t have any designs in Christmas Tree Skirts in chunky format. I’m sorry.
Mikey, I looked at the PDF for this afghan and you did an utterly wonderful job of figuring out the yarn needs for these squares! The amount of work you added to yourself just to do this for us is the absolute tops in selfless teaching.
I love your teaching anyway, it looks so professional and is levels above what I produce. Sometimes I really wish i had a house to crochet and film in. I could make a permanent area just for teaching! Oh how marvelous that would be! The little 2 by 3′ place i use is shared by 2 cats, meals, sewing, making other crafts writing, and computer work.
Morning. When I did a mystery quilt they added a new folder each month for participants to post their monthly block – would it be possible to create a folder so participants can post photos of their progress (not necessarily a monthly one!) ? but just somewhere where they are all together so fellow participants can see them all and comment / ask questions without having to scroll through all the other posts non flora Afghan related?
Just a thought ?
I know I’m keen to see everyone’s progress
Let me give that some thought. Running another platform that needs moderation is a lot of pressure as it’s another community we have to follow along with. Leave it with me to think on it.
I love your videos! I drive a truck and crochet on my downtime. My grandmother showed me how to make a simple granny square when I was 14 but I have never learned to read a pattern which I don’t need to thanks to your videos.
Beautiful square designs! Thank you for sharing!
I posted to the youtube video the below snippet. My wife and I are all about printing your patterns out but for some reason pages 1 – 2 do not print. Maybe related to that floral pattern in the upper center of page one and in the lower right section of page 2, maybe?? Troubleshooting Mac’s & PC’s is my thing, but not really documents themselves. It’s a thought:
“Interestingly enough, the PDF document for this first section printed out oddly. Pages 1 – 2 didn’t print out correctly. Several attempts tried, much troubleshooting on my part, but pages 1 and 2 do not print like the rest of the document. Viewing the PDF file, in any form, pages 1 – 2 look perfect, they just don’t print properly at all. The rest of the pages print without issue. Something in the document??”
Thanks for your assistance!
I am a bit confused–I want to sign up-is threesome way to do this so patterns comes automatically as I would have trouble remembering to go each month on the 15th. I like to be reminded or nagged which ever works.
Go to : https://www.youtube.com/user/mikeyssmail or any of his videos and subscribe and hit the bell too. You will get notice of each video.
I got my yarn tonight to start this Monday! I’d like to make this for my Queen bed and want it to drape. I think you said 16 more squares will do it. My question is do I submit pic with all 36 squares I’m doing or should I just start with the 20 for the contest and add the others after?
Brilliant overview tutorial. Amazing amount of hours and work Mikey and Dan. Recommend everyone watches this overview. Would save lots of questions I think. Really looking forward to this.???
Adelaide. South Australia.
How do we get access to the ebook pages?
I want to start this program too. How do I get the ebook?
How do we sign up to get this I can’t find a place
No sign up is required. On the 15th of each month, it will release a new square. This starts on Monday and so the book will be available then. 😀
Hi Mikey I’d love to join your crochet a long, I love the way you show us how you do the stitches and you make it very easy to follow. Would love to have the e-book. Thank you Mikey.
Hello! I hope all is well and was just wondering if I missed September’s square? I’m absolutely in love with your flora design. Thank you and happy crocheting!
It’s up now. Sorry for the delay.
I would love to participate in this CAL.
Hi Mikey, I am wondering if it is possible for you to publish the excel chart that you used to work out the yarn/meterage etc. As Caron One Pound is not sold in my country the information published in the ebook would be incorrect for me, but with the formula used in Excel I could work out my own yarn requirements. I know this is more technical than the stitch along normally gets but for me this is just as important as the actual patterns.
Let me check to see if our filming system allows me to upload a Spreadsheet to download.
I tried uploading but it matters which program you open the spreadsheet in. The information (due to formulas) errors out depending on which program you use. Also, it’s 20 MB in file data that would need to transfer across.
Is this CAL like the we been doing for 5 weeks
No, this is a separate one.
Morning Mikey.
I am using 5 colours and like Penny, I’ve not seen Caron One Pound here in Sydney and most colours are sold out online (hahaha I’m sure due to this Afghan project lol)
I’ll be purchasing 100gr balls, so I used your conversions and recreated the spreadsheet in order to try to work out how much yarn to purchase for each colour.
The first tab is the exact replica of your Chrysanthemum Page (this was to check that my conversions matched yours!)
I then created a new tab for each Block and the Border and entered the colour for each set of rounds.
The last tab is labeled Supplies – Which basically calculates how many grams is required for each colour to complete the entire afghan based on the number of squares per block
I’m happy to email it to you for review and then you can share it with any users who may be interested (The Spreadsheet is pretty small as there are no images etc.)
I’m off to purchase yarn! Yay!! 🙂
Hi Mikey. Thank you Again for all you do in the Crochet world!
Will there be a video for each of the flowers?
Would love to sign up for the eBook, please tell me how.

These Afghans are gorgeous!! I can’t wait to try them!!
I can’t wait to get started on this. Will love the challenges. I take you will be providing a link to get the ebook tutorials? Thanks you, Mikey.
This looks fabulous—can’t wait!
Love the afghan, and really like the fact that we can do any of the squares we like, I have already started thinking colours so I can take part in this CAL, have to say the gardener you were watching is Monty Don Thank you all for the hard work you and Dan put into the Crochet Crowd .
Can’t wait. You rock !!!
I am going to try this one….Looks amazing…Thanks Mickey!!!
Love love this can’t wait
Can’t wait to start your project Mikey, because I lost my husband on 2-22-2019, so need something to distract me and keep me busy. I am so ready to start this project.
This looks absolutely amazing! I love it!!! I learned to make granny squares as a kid, so I don’t consider myself anywhere near intermediate, but crocheting is something I’d like to do more of, so definitely going to give this my best try.
hi..is this free cal..or paid pattern.
is this cal free or paired pattern .. I want to get it
CAL and the e-Book are free. If you go to YouTube and watch the intro that Mikey gave prior to the start of the project it will likely answer most of your questions.

Hi
Would love to take part and I run a sewing group where many crochet so this would make an ideal group project. However I can not see how to join or download the ebook. Also what thickness is Car on one pound wool as I am not sure that is stocked in the UK.
Many thanks
Andrea
Maybe someone already answered your question. The Caron one pound is 100% acrylic #4 worsted weight. It doesn’t come in wool that I have seen on line or in stores. If you are planning to use wool, I would try and find something that’s about the same size.
Looks great!
Monty Don
Can’t wait to get started. I will be making this larger because we have one of those beds where each side is like a hospital bed single and extra long.
I would love to participate. Can’t wait to learn new stitches.
Mikey you are so intelligent can not wait to see this gorgeous blanket on you tube.I am your big fun and I learned everything from you thank you for your genius devotions!
I struggle with the computer, I would love to have the ebook directions but have no printer. Can you email it to me?
I struggle with the computer, i would love to have the ebook directions but have no printer. Can you email it to me & can keep it????
I have been crochet for years, but now I have neuropathy and have problems with my hands. But I will not give up it’s a little harder but I still love it. So I am very excited about trying this. Hope I don’t have a hard time keeping up.
I love to do this cal
Why don’t you try printing it off at the library?
Hi Mikey,
Looking forward to the CAL. My apologies if I missed it; but, will you be providing the amount of yarn needed before the project begins?
Thank you.
Hi, the info you are requesting is up here in the content of this page. Try and look for it. Is in 2 colors the blue and the pink option☺️
Hi Mikey,
This is my first Crochet Along and I am loving it! Here’s my dilemma- today is September 16 & the next Flora pattern was promoted as coming out yesterday, but I can’t find it. Did you hide it on us??
Many thanks!!
I have no printer either.
I just go to my local library and download the file then print it off.
I absolutely love the Flora Afghan and cannot wait toget started! Great work Mikey?
Ooh I can’t wait, although I am yet to put together the Christmas ornament CAL lol
These squares look beautiful ??
Hi Mikey,
This looks great, getting ready to down load the ebook.
On the Lilies in August, is there a way to use those colors, but make the different flowers each month?
Not sure I’m at an intermediate level, but would need help with would colors where?
Any words of advise, or an easy way to cover that out.
Thanks
For the colours you saw in the Lily in August example. The colours to make the entire afghan are as follows: Yarn Requirements
A – Dark Pink – 2 Balls
B – Soft Pink – 1 Ball
C – Ocean Blue – 1 Ball
D – Country Rose – 2 Balls
E – Midnight Blue – 2 Balls
F – Grass Green – 2 Balls
I would like to sign up for the Flora Afghan CAL but can’t find a link to do so. Can I get some help signing up please? TIA Alice
When are you going you do the video for Sept square
It’s out now. Sorry for my delay.
I want to participate in this CAL. Have you published the supply list and I missed it?
How can you sign up for your free eBook for the Lilies in August blanket? It is the Flora Afghan Stitch Along? I think is is to come out on April 15th but I don’t understand how you obtain the eBook. Can you explain that to me? I would like to make this afghan and enter your contest but I am not sure where to go to find the pattern and I wouldn’t want to miss any of the posted pattern. I would like to stitch along with everyone else. Please let me know how this works. Thank you in advance.
Hi Tricia, when you click on the “get pattern”, your computer should ask you if you want to download the pdf e-book. The only reason you might not have your computer give you a response for downloading the e-book is if you don’t have adobe acrobat on your computer. You will need to have that first. The file is in ‘portable download format” aka pdf. Adobe Acrobat provides a free program so that people can download pdf files. Right now, the Chrysanthemum and Flower Clock patterns are available with tutorials. The complete e-book as currently available provides the amounts needed for the entire afghan but does not yet have the instructions for each of the squares.
hi would love to know the colors used in blanket
the grey and white blanket
thanks!!!!!
Hi Mikey,

This is gorgeous! I love your creativity….looking forward to April ?❤️
Yay
I’m moving ‘over the pond’ from Scotland on May 4th so just in time for this. ( Lilies an appropriate square too ?) It looks amazing! I only know red heart yarn so need to learn about all the yarns available in the u.s. Guessing Caron One Pound is a good yarn?
