Crochet Calming Comfort Afghan Stitch Along
Do you need peace and comfort after the busy holiday season? Then this stitch along, featuring my new Calming Comfort Afghan will be the one for you.
Welcome to this year's edition of our 2021 Boxing Day Stitch Along. I'm super excited to be hosting the event for the 2nd year in a row.
The project will begin on December 26, 2021, and continue for the following 3 weeks. You'll want to choose your favourite yarns to be ready to crochet with us once the free pattern is released each week.
For the personal story behind this design, if you are interested, I had been struggling with work issues for a couple of months. Not depressed, more frustrated than anything. It was keeping my mind away from design ideas. I was inspired by an all blue and white afghan that I happened to see when visiting Jimmy Beans Wool in September. I knew what I wanted to do for colours, and had ideas for stitches I wanted to use, but just could not get started. I finally reached out to Michael for the final bit of inspiration I needed. He designed the very beginning 8" square. He wanted no credit, but he has always been such an amazing mentor, that I have to thank him for pushing me up when I am down. Work is still hectic, but when returning from the office each evening, I found my calming comfort while crocheting this afghan.

Special Stitches
Standing Sc = Form slip knot and insert onto the hook. Insert hook into st, yoh and pull loop through, yoh through 2 loops.
Join = Join all rounds with hdc first st (sc, top of ch 3). This is equivalent to a ch-2 sp corner. When joining new yarn to a corner space, use the hdc post that is joining as the ch-2 sp.
Popcorn = Work 4 dc into the next st or sp, drop the loop from the hook, insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first double crochet of the group, grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch, ch 1 to close.
Beg Popcorn = Ch 2, work 3 dc into the same st or sp, drop the loop from the hook, insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first double crochet of the group, grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch, ch 1 to close.
Cluster = 3 dc together in same st or sp, ch 1 to close.
X-st = Skip next st, 1 dc in next st, 1 dc in skipped st. 1 X-st complete.

Weave in ends, damp block and enjoy. I hope this blanket brought you calming comfort as it did me. ~ Jeanne
If you would like a full pattern print out, I have condensed the 4 weeks into one PDF file.
Thanks so much to testers, Diane Suder and Cathy Lund.
Deb Carlson says
Week 1 complete! I love starting the new year with a beautiful project
Wendy says
Has anyone tried to make pattern this into a baby blanket say 40x40 size range? This pattern intrigues me for a baby girl blanket. Let me know.

Tina Devaney says
I am doing it as a baby blanket in a light weight cotton yarn (3) with a 4.5mm hook and it is turning out beautifully! I just starting week 4, and I believe it I’ll be a perfect baby blanket size!
Tina Devaney says
I am making it into a baby blanket using light weight cotton yarn (3) and a 4.5mm hook. I am on week 4 and it is turning out beautifully. I believe it will be the perfect size for a baby blanket
Mary says
Afternoon, do you recommend every once in a while starting in a different corner so the blanket doesn't look like it is "turning or rotating"? Thanks.
Mikey says
I wouldn't hesitate doing that.
Donna Graves says
So, has anyone ever tried doing that? This is the reason I hesitate doing a "square" afghan again because I don't like that look. But if that works would you start the next round on the opposite corner or the next corner?
Mikey says
I generally like starting on different corners throughout the blanket so the seamline doesn't all line up.
